Winchester gave a short nod, smiled softly at Evie, and walked away.

“That’s it?” Evie raised her brow at her husband. “Thank you? There should have been a grand reconciliation! Forgiveness of all that came before.”

Gabriel just shrugged. “Itwasa grand reconciliation. What did you want, tears?”

“At least a few more words than ‘thank you.’” She parodied his gruff voice and

Gabriel laughed.

“I am tired of talking and thinking about the past. How about we talk about the future?”

“Mm, I like the sound of that.” She settled more comfortably on the bed. “What do you want to talk about?”

“Well, now that you wrestled Forton from Bingham’s hands, what are you going to do with it?”

“I already have a plan. Since Peacehaven does not need the caretaker anymore, at least until it gets renovated, I thought of sending Mr. Cromwell there. I think he would be happy in a small, friendly village. He is not fond of big cities.”

“Ahh, you are hoping he would find a friend there, say maybe Widow Jane?”

“Maybe.” Evie shrugged innocently. “Two lonely souls could find a lot to talk about. And they both enjoy dominoes.”

Gabriel chuckled. “We should visit the place again too.”

Evie nodded. “But how do we explain the absence of the babe to Widow Jane?” She grimaced. “I really don’t want to lie to her again.”

Gabriel snaked his arm around Evie’s waist and crushed her to him. He lowered his head to hers. “Then we better start working on one,” he said against her lips before possessing her mouth in a fierce kiss.
