“A problem here, laddies?” he boomed as he stepped beside Gabriel.

Evie peeked out from behind Gabriel’s shoulder again. He snaked his arm behind them both and gripped her tightly so that she was plastered to him.

“No problem. Just chatting with the happy couple,” one of the thugs answered.

“Stay back. The moment I let go of you, you run to the inn and lock yourself in our room, all right?” Gabriel said in a quiet whisper so that only she could hear, as the thugs continued their conversation with the blacksmith,

“What—”

“Don’t argue, for once. Just do as I ask.”

“Gabriel, I have a pistol,” she whispered through her teeth. Evie didn’t see what was going on between the thugs and the blacksmith, but the voices grew louder, the argument becoming more heated.

Gabriel paused in stunned silence for a moment before wiggling his fingers. “Give it to me and leave.”

“But—”

“What do you think will happen if they catch you? I want you out of here, hear me?”

Evie begrudgingly handed the pistol to him.

“You are not breaking off one of my marriages,” the blacksmith called louder.

“All right, the moment I let go, you run.” Gabriel patted her back lightly.

Blood rushed loudly through her head. She could hear the voices, but she couldn’t distinguish what was being said. In the next moment, Gabriel let go of her abruptly and took a step forward.

“Go!” he yelled without looking at her. A gun fired, and she raced in the direction of the inn.
