Gabriel snorted. High praise indeed. She did have a point, however. He needed money. She had money. He never wanted to get shackled to a wife. She proposed an arrangement where she’d leave him to his own devices. The bargain seemed too good to be true, but he wasn’t about to look a gift horse in the mouth.

“All right,” he finally said. “But I have one condition.”

She looked at him curiously, all wide-eyed innocence.

“If you ever change your mind about having children, you come to me.”

Her eyes widened further, almost comically so.

“What?” He shrugged nonchalantly. “I am going to be an earl. I am not anxious about having an heir, but as long as there is one, might as well be mine. Besides, I don’t like the idea of my wife cuckolding me.”

She laughed. A beautiful, seductive sound. “As opposed to the other way around?”

Gabriel leaned forward so she wouldn’t see the tent forming in his breeches. “Listen, sweet, those were your rules. You’re the one who insisted on me continuing my debauched ways after marriage.”

“And if I insisted on fidelity? Would you have agreed?” She cocked an eyebrow.

“I suppose you will never know now, will you?” he said with a satisfied smirk.
