“Did you see the girl?” Gabriel scoffed. “Nobody would return unscathed after one look at her, let alone ten days. At least I married her.” He smiled at his glass of scotch and took another sip.

“You are in love with her,” Clydesdale observed dispassionately.

“I wouldn’t use the word love.” Gabriel shrugged. “Infatuated is more likely. Although, I don’t think I’ve ever been infatuated with anyone. So, who am I to judge?”

“And you’re just going to let her go?” Clydesdale looked at him questioningly. “The first time you feel deeply about a girl, you marry her and let her go?”

Gabriel smiled sadly. “That’s what she wants.”

“Since when do you care about other people’s wants?” Clydesdale snorted.

“You said it yourself. I am not fit to be her husband. I don’t care for anyone but myself. Scandal follows me around like a shadow. There’s really no upside for living with me.” Gabriel shrugged. “She is better off without me.”

Clydesdale looked at him with a thoughtful frown on his face. “Listen, Gabe. I know I might have come a bit strongly about this, but I care for Evie a lot, and I wouldn’t want her to get hurt. She clearly cares about you, too.”

Gabriel’s head shot up at that.

“However,” Clydesdale continued slowly, “don’t make any move unless you’re certain. Don’t give her false hope. If you are not planning to be with her forever, don’t seduce her.”

Gabriel scoffed and downed another glass of scotch. Clydesdale followed the movement of his hand and then slowly walked toward his friend. He took the empty glass from Gabriel and placed it face down on the side table.

“And please don’t drink anymore.” He patted Gabriel on the shoulder and walked toward the door. “I want you to know that my initial impulse to come here was to check if you’d emptied Evie’s coffers. But I can see that you care for her. So, I shall trust you. But if you ever hurt her, I shall not hesitate to break your beautiful face.” He grinned openly at Gabriel’s miserable grimace and walked out the door.
