“Oh, trust me. I know.” He grinned at her and waggled his brows. “Actually, I’ve been working on revitalizing my accounts. Looking into prospects on where to invest, believe it or not.”

“Not.” Evie smiled. “Where did you get the capital? My solicitor told me you didn’t take a penny from me, which by the way, I meant to speak with you about.”

“There is nothing to discuss; that money is yours. And contrary to what you might believe about me, I am not a spendthrift. I do have some savings. Or I do now, as I’ve sold my curricle and a couple of other things. Granted, I would never know what to do with that money other than gamble it away—which I do rather splendidly—but I am determined to change my irresponsible ways. Do not tell my father. He’d be too pleased to hear this.”

“Why?”

“Well, he was always spouting about the responsibility I have to his title, which by the way, I think is bull crap, considering he never cared a whit for the responsibility he had to his son, but I digress.”

Evie licked her lips, studying Gabriel intently. “Why do it then? If not for your title, or to impress your father and regain your fortune.”

“Because, my dear wife, I couldn’t very well let you carry all the burdens and have the ton gossip about who wears the breeches in our household. Which they would be surprised to find out that both of us do.” He grinned, and Evie shook her head, smiling.

Dear, she’d missed him.
