“You want to teach them a lesson. And what will it take? Will you injure poor Bingham, or do you need to kill him to get your point across? You could die doing so, or you could get sentenced to death or exiled. Dueling is illegal!”

“First of all, he dug his own grave the moment he touched you—”

“Gabriel!”

“Secondly, do you think I am doing this just for you? How am I supposed to sleep at night knowing that you might be somewhere out there, alone and unprotected! Especially since you insist on living separately from me. I need to let everybody know that if they so much as touch you or look at you the wrong way, they are earning themselves a spot at dawn. Otherwise, you won’t be safe. It is my responsibility to take care of you.”

“This was not a part of our bargain—”

“Oh, for the love of—” Gabriel scrubbed his face with one hand. “Would you just forget the blasted bargain?”

The carriage halted, and Gabriel took a few breaths before jumping out of the vehicle and helping her out. He reached the front door of her townhouse and waited for the butler to open it before speaking.

“We can discuss this later—”

Evie rounded on him, her face full of resolution. “Do you think I am going to let you saunter off into the night and go arrange more duels? Oh, no, you are coming with me, my lord.”

Gabriel raised a brow. “If you want to make certain there’s no duel at dawn—”

“I know what this means; please step inside.”

Gabriel slowly walked in as the butler closed the door after him with a smirk. He stood there, obviously waiting for more instructions.

“Let the cook know she should prepare breakfast for two in the morning,” Evie said, her voice shaking slightly.

Gabriel crossed his arms on his chest and raised his brow in challenge.

“That will be all.” She smiled at her butler.

The man bowed and hurried away.

“What, no guest chamber for me?” Gabriel asked cockily.

“If you think I shall let you out of my sight tonight, you’re sorely mistaken.”

“Ahh,” Gabriel drawled. “Just like the good old days. Shall I be occupying the floor once again?”

Evie took a deep breath. “That depends on your behavior, my lord,” she said playfully and started up the stairs.
