“And you were getting too attached.” He twirled her around again, holding her tight to his chest, perhaps tighter than was proper.

Pain flashed inside her dark chocolate eyes. “And you weren’t?”

“That’s why I stopped. Why else?” he growled.

Jo caught her breath, then looked away. They continued dancing in silence for a few more moments.

Richard puffed a breath of frustration. He knew he couldn’t make it right. So why did he even try?

He knew why. He wanted to experience having her in his arms again, inhaling her wonderful scent of rosewater, looking into her deep, chocolate eyes.

Just once, his heart cried. Although he knew it would never be enough. “You know there is no future for us.”

“I know, Richard.” She halted, and just at that moment, the music stopped. “So stop seeking me out.”
