Olivia’s smile faltered, and she raised her expressive eyes to his. Her eyes darkened as she stared, unblinking, into his eyes. Jarvis tipped his head, ready to meet her lips with his, craving to taste her mouth. Olivia froze, not moving toward him, but not moving away either.

The viscountess cleared her throat as she entered the room, startling them apart. Olivia jerked out of his arms, hitting her forehead against his chin.

“Ow!”

“I’m sorry, are you all right?” Jarvis reached for her, but she stepped back.

“Yes,” Olivia said, her eyes running wildly around the room. She rubbed her forehead and winced. “I am good. Must be all the twirling.”

“What happened?” Lady Landen stepped farther into the room.

“I was able to twirl without stumbling. Well, almost. Jarvis came up with an excellent idea, which seemed to work really well until I got vertigo,” Olivia said in a rush of words, clearly still uncomfortable from their encounter.

“Well, in that case, I think the tea is in order. Let us go back to the parlor. The housekeeper is setting up there, and your father is going to join us,” the viscountess said.

Olivia nodded to the floor and turned to leave. Jarvis smiled a radiant smile toward Lady Landen and offered his arm. “Shall we?”

Lady Landen smiled and took his arm as they followed a flustered Olivia out of the room.
