Jarvis made a few steps toward Greyson. “Helen is ill? Do you think she should leave?”

“She is overwhelmed with the activities here, and she is anxious when she can’t participate. Please, do not argue with me on this.”

Greyson turned to leave, but Jarvis stopped him again. “When are you planning on leaving?”

“As soon as possible.”

“Then we can share my carriage,” Jarvis said. “I was planning to leave this party first thing in the morning, anyway.”

“You were?” Greyson asked.

“You were?” Olivia’s voice echoed behind Jarvis’s back.

Jarvis briefly closed his eyes.

“Thank you.” Greyson clapped Jarvis on his bad shoulder. Jarvis flinched, but Greyson didn’t notice. He was already making his way back to his room. “I shall notify Helen of the good news. She’ll be very glad.”

Jarvis turned slowly toward Olivia.

“You are leaving,” she said, looking hurt and confused.

Jarvis flinched once more. But now, it had nothing to do with his aching shoulder. Olivia’s hurt eyes were like a dagger through his soul.
