“Yes. None of that is true. I just needed to speak to you, and it seemed like you were avoiding me.”

Jarvis cleared his throat and looked away. “I was quite poor in health.”

Liar. Olivia tried for a sweet smile. “And now you feel better?”

“Much.” Jarvis nodded for emphasis.

“Please, sit down. I still need to speak with you.”

Olivia sat beside the fireplace, butterflies rioting in her stomach. Jarvis settled across from her.

“Firstly, you shall be glad to know that our plan worked.”

Jarvis looked up sharply. “Our plan?”

“Yes.” Olivia tried for a carefree smile. She wasn’t certain she succeeded. “Bradshaw proposed.”

Jarvis sat frozen like a statue. He didn’t move. Olivia started to worry if he even breathed.

“S-so you didn’t make it up?” he finally croaked out.

Olivia waved her hand. “Not that part, no. But I haven’t yet consented.”

“Why not?”

Olivia lowered her gaze. “Because I am having second thoughts.”

She peeked from beneath her lashes. Jarvis stared at her with wide eyes.

“W-why?” he finally asked.

“Well, I met a man.”

Jarvis scoffed. He stood and started pacing the floor. “Do not tell me that you spent the entirety of the past few weeks trying to ensnare a man, and the moment you did, you moved on to some other poor bastard?”

Olivia frowned. “Why are you angry?”

“I am not angry!” Jarvis took a deep breath. “I am not. I just… am in disbelief. Who is he?”

“Well, this is where the trouble lies. I do not know.” Olivia’s hands were locked in a tight grip.

“You do not…” He paused and looked at her as if startled.

“It’s the masked man who saved me.”

Jarvis just kept staring at her, frozen in his tracks.

Olivia was ready to howl with laughter at his reaction. She’d just told him she was ready to give up Bradshaw for him, and he was standing there, frozen, with nothing to say.

He scratched his jaw, still unable to form the words. “You… you met him just once,” he finally said.

“Twice, technically. And he kissed me.”

Jarvis turned a frown upon her. “And that was enough to win you over? A conversation and a kiss?”

“Well, and the heroics,” she said, with as serious of a grimace as she could muster.

Jarvis let out a breath. “But you do not know who he is.”
