“You reciprocated,” he answered.

Olivia cocked her head. “You didn’t answer my question.”

“You were laughing. What else was I to do?”

“Oh, so you only kiss ladies to shut them up?”

Jarvis snorted. “And you seem to kiss anyone without discrimination.”

Olivia rounded on him. “What is that supposed to mean?”

“Do not act so innocent! Bradshaw, your mysterious midnight savior, and now me. I did not think you to be so indiscriminate with your favors, but here you are!”

Olivia’s mouth fell open. She narrowed her eyes at him. “Is that what you think of me?”

Jarvis crossed his arms across his chest, silent.

“If I were a gentleman, I would require a duel!”

“A duel?” Jarvis cocked a brow.

“You sullied my honor!”

Jarvis let out a deep sigh. “I am sorry, Olive. I did not mean to… sully your honor or hurt your feelings. You are a passionate woman, and it’s natural to…” He ran his fingers through his hair.

Olivia stood in front of him, her eyes narrowed, tapping her foot nervously on the carpet.

“It is natural that you’re curious and exploring your femininity. I just hoped I wouldn’t be one of your… test subjects.”

“Is that what you really think of me? That my passionate nature is to kiss and… and touch and… do all that”—she waved her hands to his crotch—“with every passing gentleman?”

“It’s not a bad thing,” he added hastily, trying to find the right words. He didn’t want to upset her. Clearly, women had the same needs as men. His only wish was that she wasn’t so open with her desires. Well, that wasn’t entirely true. His true wish was that she used only him to fulfill her desires. “You are a strong, vivacious woman, and the desire to kiss and touch a gentleman is natural. I am your close friend and—”

He didn’t finish the sentence because at that moment, he felt a slight burn in his cheek as Olivia slapped him. His mask had gone askew, so he took it off. Olivia’s eyes widened as if she was as surprised by her own action as he was.

Jarvis closed his eyes briefly. He was clearly saying something wrong.

Olivia composed herself rather quickly and narrowed her eyes on him. “You are an idiot, Jarvis,” she said sharply.

“I figured as much,” he said tightly. “Could you, please, enlighten me on which reason you’re alluding to?”

“First of all,” she started through her clenched teeth. “Do you really think that I wouldn’t recognize you as a Shadow?” Jarvis’s eyes widened, but she continued. “I’ve known you as long as I can remember. Do you think a mask and a piece of cloth are going to fool me?”

When did she find out the truth?“When—” he started, but she waved a hand to silence him.

“I recognized you the moment you landed in front of me that first night you saved us.”

“How?”

Olivia’s face took on a pitying grimace. “I shall always know it is you, Jarvis. Or did you think that it was only you who knew me better than anyone?”

Jarvis swallowed, his thoughts frantic. That night in her bedroom, when he kissed her and brought her to pleasure, she knew it was him. She’d given herself to him. She had said she was considering refusing Bradshaw for him!

A wide smile split his lips, but Olivia still looked at him like he was an abomination.

“Oh, now you are smiling!” she accused. “And just a moment ago, you were thinking me a harlot!”

Jarvis pulled her into his arms and held her tight against his body. “I believe the word I used was passionate.”
