“He knows you are well. He has his people watching our every step. Do you really have so little trust in your brother?”

“Trust? I had too much trust in people I shouldn’t have.” She scoffed. “I need to see my brother.”

“If you leave, he will not let you come back to me.”

Eloise swallowed. “This is something I have to do. And you said before… If I want something, all I have to do is ask. Or are you going to go back on that word too?”

“No,” he said. “I shall do anything for you. But if you need to see your brother, we can arrange that without you having to leave these halls.”

“So, I cannot leave?” Eloise cried.

“You can. With me.”

Eloise scoffed and turned away. The tray of food still left from her evening meal caught her eye. There lay the pomegranate Keyon made certain was brought with every meal. It was untouched, as always, as she was not ready to commit to him yet. Now it was obvious that it was just a formality for him. Keyon never meant to let her go.

“You have to understand that I cannot let you disappear, Eloise,” he said. “I keep what’s mine, and youaremine.”

Eloise turned back to him, her eyes filling with tears.

A loud bang sounded on the door, startling them both.

“Master! Master! Are you in here?”

“Come,” Keyon boomed and walked toward the door.

Lucien ran inside as if the hounds of hell were on his tail. “The thief-takers! They are here!”
