“What do you have to lose?”

William’s last words spurred Hades into action. He was right. Hades did not have anything more to lose. If Eloise died, he might as well just jump into the water himself. He bent over her and put his lips to hers. He breathed in three times, then looked at her. Nothing seemed to change.

“Keep breathing!” William said, and Hades complied.

He kept whooshing breaths into her as he silently begged for her to wake up. Eloise’s body convulsed, and she coughed, water leaving her mouth. Hades instinctively turned her to her side and held her close to him.

Her limbs were cold, and she was shivering, but she was alive. Hades was reluctant to believe his eyes.

“Keyon?” Her hand clutched at his wet clothing and he pulled her closer, rubbing her body.

“Yes, darling, I am here. I am here.”

William let out a breath of relief, and Garric scrubbed his face—both men clearly happy this time there were no fatalities.

Hades held Eloise close, trying to warm her, as she lay in his arms, still shivering. “I am not letting you go this time,” he said against her hair.

“Um, mate.” William tapped Hades on his arm. “You might want to reconsider your last words.”

Hades raised his head and stared down the barrel of a shotgun. “Step away from my sister,” said the thief-taker with a fierce frown.
