“Just… on the bedside table, please. Thank you.”

The boy placed the armful of books and skittered away.

Eloise approached the bedside table and looked through the books. They were stories, old fables, and volumes of Greek mythology.

“What are those?” Verity asked.

“Books.” Eloise turned to Verity with a puzzled frown on her face. “I asked Hades to provide me with something to do—to read—and apparently, he decided to comply.”

Verify scoffed. “You wreck the room, I clean it up, and you get gifts?”

Eloise smiled. “I am sorry I stuck you with the cleaning.”

“No need to fret, deary.” Verity waved the apology away. She came closer and peeked over Eloise’s shoulder. “What are the books about?”

Eloise squinted, shuffling the books in her hands. “Just some fables. Do you want to read them? We can share.”

Verity shrugged. “I don’t know how to read.”

Eloise blinked. “Oh, I am sorry.” How many dumb assumptions would she make today?

“No need to be sorry. You do not know how to please a man,” Verity said cockily.

Eloise was startled into laughter. “No, I do not. But apparently, I do know how to get what I want from men. Or at least one man. Well, if you want to, I can read a little to you after supper.”

Verity shrugged as if it was of no importance, but Eloise could see curiosity light up behind her eyes.
