Realization hit Sebastian unbidden. “You recognize the note,” he said with a tone of resignation in his voice.

He didn’t think he had a right to feel betrayed, but the feelings weren’t rational.

Lavinia didn’t take the note. She didn’t read it. She just nodded as she turned toward him, unable to meet his eye. “I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

She swallowed. “Eventually.” Then she looked at him with tears in her eyes. “It’s not an easy topic to breach, Sebastian. But I wasn’t going to marry you without telling you the truth.”

“Is it true then? What the note says, is it true?”

Lavinia looked up at him with pain-filled eyes. “Yes.”
