Chapter 17

Sebastian’s heart drummed in his chest as he sneaked away from the drawing-room once more, this time not to find Victoria, but to join his muse in the garden.

She looked coy and dare he say shy when she’d asked to speak with him, but he had a feeling she had more in mind than just a conversation. His cock moved just thinking about it.

When he came to bed the night before, he could not sleep. He kept thinking, dreaming of her.

He knew he couldn’t have her. She was an innocent.

When he’d thought that she’d had an affair with the duke, he’d contemplated making her his mistress. He’d thought of spending nights with her, painting her, painting on her. Licking her all over…

But this was different. In her innocent, guileless way, she’d admitted to him that she’d never been kissed, and he could not ruin that innocence. But he could not avoid the pull she had on him, either. He couldn’t avoid his rabid desire to possess her.

He wouldn’t possess her, of course. But he wouldn’t say no to stealing a few more kisses and perhaps making her feel needed, wanted. Making her feel as desirable as she was to him.

And perhaps he could make her feel something else she’d never felt before.

He swallowed and paused just as he saw her pacing behind the rose bushes. She seemed anxious and out of sorts.

Of course, this must have been the first rendezvous she had arranged. He smiled at the thought. The sun glinted off her brown hair as she walked back and forth. She puckered her lips, and there was a frown between her brows.

No matter, he’d smooth out the wrinkles on her face in no time.

He stepped out of the shadowed corner, and Lavinia jumped and placed her hand on her chest. She did that a lot. She was very easily spooked.

Sebastian smiled and stepped further into the alcove. “You wanted to speak to me?”

Lavinia wrung her hands nervously in front of her. “Yes.”

Sebastian nodded. “Very well. But first—” He took one long step, and he was right in front of her. Sebastian lowered his head and caught her mouth in a soft feather of a kiss.

Lavinia instantly melted into him, and he had to weave his hands around her to keep her upright. She took him by the lapels of his coat and tugged him closer as she kissed him ardently.

“You feel so good,” he whispered against her lips.

Lavinia moaned and rose on her tiptoes, pressing herself closer to him. Her soft curves enveloped his body in a warm, delightful feeling.

Sebastian took her face between his palms and angled her face for better access. She welcomed his tongue and moaned into his mouth, pressing herself even closer to him.

Sebastian tore his mouth away and trailed kisses down her face, then buried his face in the crook of her shoulder. “You are so beautiful, so—”

Sebastian was about to draw her even closer, but she jumped again, in her characteristic spooked way, and frantically looked around.

Her chest was rising and falling with her every breath, drawing his attention to her breasts. Sebastian tugged on her hand. “Do not worry, we are alone.”

“For now,” she whispered and stepped away from him.

“What?”

He didn’t want to let go of her hand, but she pulled away from him.

“We shouldn’t be here,” she whispered, still frantically looking around. “Please, we have to go.”

Sebastian scowled in confusion. “What’s wrong?”

Lavinia covered her face with her palms. “People are coming, please.”

She looked at him with such misery in her eyes, so he complied. They exited the gardens through his gallery hall, and he tugged her into a tiny, vacant closet.
