Perhaps fear?

Either way, tears rolled down her cheeks, and she wanted to crush and destroy everything around her. Nothing had gone like it was supposed to. Everything was crumbling down around her, and there was nothing to hold on to anymore. She had no strength left in her, and all she wanted to do was cry into her pillow.

She leaned her back against the wall and sobbed loudly. Curse anyone who might hear her. Let them. What else did she have to lose?

Her dignity?

She snorted. What was her dignity worth when her life was ruined?

She wiped her face and stood there, waiting for her thoughts to catch up with reality. What was she doing here, at this house party? Who was she trying to fool? She would never be able to ensnare a husband. Her only option was to trap someone into marriage and truly, if she couldn’t do it to Lord Roth, she wouldn’t be able to do it to anyone.

Besides, living with a husband who resented her for such an entrapment wouldn’t be better than living with an old hermit up North.

Actually, that might be the best solution yet. Why was she trying to outrun her guardian’s plan? Yes, she knew of quite a few old, lecherous men her father owed money to. But could her life with such a man be any worse than her life was up until now under her father’s roof? She could take Matilda with her as her companion. Or if all else failed, she’d have to rely upon Annalise’s generosity to house Matilda.

But what of the note?

She straightened and paced the floor of the empty room. What of the note? So far, the person who’d written it hadn’t even threatened her. It just saidI know what you did.But it didn’t say anything else.

Was it possible that she was overreacting?

She continued pacing back and forth and thinking about her wretched situation until her mind was muddled. But she did come to a final decision. Her time at the house party was over. She was going home.
