He kissed my head, holding me.

“Can we wait before we tell anyone else? I know it’s not just about me, but can we please just…wait some?”

“It is all about you. And yes, we can. I trust everyone around us, but I’ll talk to them. Until you are ready, we won’t say anything. Just rest, okay?”

I nodded and gripped his hand. Everything was going to be okay, right? I could feel myself yawning…when suddenly I shot up. “I need to get ready! We are supposed to go—”

“Relax, I’ve canceled,” he said, trying to get me to lie back down.

“Gale, you can’t! People will question—”

“I can, and I have. And I’ll leave Balduin to come up with an excuse. Lie back down,” he ordered me back gently.

“Don’t start treating me…” I was going to say like I was fragile, but last time… I pushed the negative thoughts back and closed my eyes.

I waited until I was sure she was asleep and wouldn’t get up again before I stepped out into the living room, walking to the front door. I knocked once and stepped back.

“Sir?” Iskandar poked his head in.

“Call Gelula, Thelma, and Wolfgang for me. Also, you and Balduin come as well,” I said as I walked to the wide windows overlooking Paris. In the evening, it was clear to see why it was called the city of lights. It was like thousands of stars had fallen and settled right over the city.

“Yes, sir.”

Odette…she was too scared to be happy right now. What happened seemed to have really scared her, but then how could it not have? When she was telling me, I was happy, but the more she cried in my arms, the more I realized it felt like she was telling me just in case something happened again.

I had no words to ease her worry, either, not after last time. It was better now to offer her more than words…we needed to make sure.

“Sir, everyone is here.”

Turning back, I faced them…our front defense. Our biggest aid…still I had to say it. “Please…until she gives birth, she is your number one priority…more so even than me. Make sure everything around her is safe. Double-check all of her meals, anyone who comes too close. There can be no mistakes here.”

“Yes, sir,” Wolfgang replied.

“Sir, we will do everything in our power to help protect her, as always,” Iskandar replied with his hands behind his back. “But no one is ever a bigger priority than you.”

“Wow, he really doesn’t know how to read the room,” Wolfgang muttered, shaking his head, causing the others to chuckle, even Thelma.

Iskandar looked like he didn’t understand.

“For now, keep everything quiet. That is all. Thank you,” I said to them and took a deep breath. I sat hunched over, feeling like something else had been added to my shoulders. But it wasn’t a brick…it was more like a butterfly.

Nothing should happen again.

“Please,” I whispered to myself…to God…anyone who would hear.

All I wanted was for the next couple of months to be quiet and simple. That was what we needed right now. Calm at the very least until she had the baby…

Then I would be a dad.

“Oh my God.” I placed my hand over my mouth. I couldn’t describe the feeling I was having…me a dad?

Me.

This life…it was wild.
