I hadn’t slept.

I sat in my office at the window, watching as the darkness faded and morning haze covered the earth until the sun was high in the sky. I just sat there, in yesterday’s suit, shoeless, wondering what the hell I could do…wondering what the hell was this shit?

Knock.

Knock.

“Go away.”

I didn’t want to see anyone. I couldn’t face anyone.

Knock.

Knock.

“What!”

“Sir—”

“Balduin, I am not in the mood right now. Whatever it is can wait. Cancel my meetings for the day. I don’t want to see anyone!”

“Sir, it’s your father.”

Turning around, I looked at him, breathing heavily as I stared at his face. He was trying not to have an expression. And I hated when they all did that because it always told me something was wrong.

“What happened?”

“Late last night he had a massive stroke—”

“Is…he…”

“He is alive, sir, but the doctors have determined he’s suffering from paralysis on the left side of his body.”

Just what I need!

Hanging my head, I tried to breathe. But I was really fucking sick of this damn week. I wanted someone to knock me out. But my mother’s face came to mind, and so did her voice, the words she often told me when I felt like this. “We are all looking for someone to save us, but no one will come because we are the people who must do the saving.”

Inhaling, I lifted my head and got up. “Cancel my meetings, and prepare the plane. I’m going to see them.”

“Now, sir?”

“Yes.”

“I’ll let Her Majesty—”

“I’m going alone, Balduin. Have someone bring me a change of clothes and shoes as well as some damn socks. The moment I’m ready, we will leave.”

“Yes, sir.” He bowed and left.

I had wanted to visit my father. I had wanted to show him I was different, and yet now, I felt like the man I was going to see was far from the man that was in my mind. And if he saw me, I bet he was going to be even more disappointed.
