“Enter,” I said.

When I did, her grip on me tightened as she lowered her head more. Like she was so ashamed to even see anyone. It broke my heart to see her like this. Shifting, I wrapped my arms around her, allowing her to rest her head on my chest. She kept her eyes closed. A female doctor came in with one assistant rolling in an ultrasound machine and her big medical bag.

“Your Majest—”

“Please just get on with it,” I begged.

“Of course, but Your Grace, I will need you to lie back so I can examine you,” she added.

I looked at Odette, who was still trying to disappear into my chest. “Bevilën.”

She exhaled sharply and nodded. Rising from the bed, I helped her to lay back down, holding one hand. The doctor pulled down the sheets, and I could still see the blood stained on them. With a bit lip, I turned to face Odette, stroking her face.

“My hand might be a bit cold,” she said, but Odette didn’t speak, just looked away. The only way I knew she heard her was by how tightly she gripped me as the doctor touched her stomach.

We both waited.

“This will be cold, too,” she said as she placed the jelly or cream or whatever on her stomach, bringing the machine over to check.

However, she didn’t say anything.

The more silent she was clicking away, the harder it was for either of us to bear.

“Your Majesty, can I speak to you—”

“Just say it,” Odette ordered, opening her eyes. “I already know. Just say it. I lost it.”

I swallowed, trying my best not to show anything on my face. This was hard enough for her already.

“Say it,” Odette begged.

“Ma’am, you are still pregnant.”

My head whipped to her. “What?” Odette gasped, shaking her head. “No, I saw…I saw it when I went to the bathroom. I miscarried.”

“Yes, you did, ma’am.”

“I don’t understand? Didn’t you just say she was still pregnant?” I questioned angrily.

“You miscarried one twin. The other one is still okay,” she stated.

“What?” Odette stared at her. “Twins? You never said I had twins before?”

“Apparently, this one was hiding,” she said, pointing to the sack on the screen. With the flip of a switch, we heard the swooshing sound of a heartbeat. “This sometimes happens in the first trimester, especially with twins. Oftentimes one twin is more pronounced than the other. And you can’t hear two hearts if they are in sync. This happens. You did nothing wrong. I’m so sorry you lost one, ma’am, but the other one is still here… Both of you are okay.”

Odette stared at her for a long time before falling back onto the bed, bringing her hands to her face, sobbing. Bending beside her, I hugged her tightly.

It hurt…losing one hurt.

But God, I was damned relieved.

Chapter 26

“Most of the documents will already be completed. All Her Majesty has to do is submit them, sign her name, and no more than five minutes later, her new identification will be brought to her,” the prime minister explained with glee as he and the advisors he had brought to the meeting showed me and my advisors and lawyers, as well as the queen’s staff, his plans.

And oh, did he have plans.

“Is there a contingency plan?” Mr. Elling asked, looking over the documents.
