“They left. Now go on.” Her eyes narrowed at me as if she knew exactly what I was trying to do.

“My schedule has been slowed down. I only have a few events. Gale will be doing more on my behalf, around my due date.”

“Well, that’s good. At least you won’t be overwhelmed then.”

“Yeah, not then, just now. I’m hosting my very first royal family, the King and Queen of Bhutan. They were the first ones not only to congratulate us but also come with gifts during our wedding.”

“Oh, you are going to see Arjun and Dema? I’m glad. They are sweethearts, really. They remind me of you and Gale, actually. Apparently, their kingdom allows for polygamy, but Arjun vowed to never take another woman but Dema.”

I just stared at her. She was on a first-name basis with them? I had been barely able to speak to anyone during our wedding. “Mom, you spoke to them at the wedding?”

“Of course, I loved Dema’s jewelry and wanted to know where she got it. Then she and I just started talking. Be friends with her. I like her. And you know me, it’s very hard for me to like people.”

“You really can strike up a conversation with anyone, can’t you?”

Knock.

Knock.

“Come in,” I said, and Gelula entered, curtsying to me.

“Is everything all right? I thought I still had ten more minutes before you came for me.”

“I’m not sure, ma’am, but this will need your attention,” she said, lifting the tablet for me. When she did that, it was always something media related, and if she was bringing it to me, it was serious.

“Mom, I’m going to have to call you back,” I said, nodding for Gelula to come closer. When she did and showed me the article, I wanted to freaking curse!

Damn The Morning Eagle!

Damn them to hell.

“Royal Love Triangle:

The King, the Queen, and the Guard”

You may not know him. But if you’ve seen the king, he’s most likely there somewhere.

Iskandar Ruegg, the king’s most loyal and personal guard, first in his class, a descendant of the Order of the Fallen Knights, son of Reuben Ruegg, who was injured protecting King Lionel III, is in love with King Galahad, according to our sources…and not in a platonic way. Why the king? Well, that’s what our source says. We wonder…how does the king feel about it?

When Balduin told me there was a problem…and that problem involved Iskandar, I wanted to laugh.

That was not possible.

There were some things in this world that were constant. The sun rising in the morning and setting in the evening was a constant. All people living and dying was a constant. Iskandar Ruegg did not cause scandals…that was a constant to me, at least, which was why I was so baffled by the article in front of me.

“Of all the people they could choose to slander like this, they chose Iskandar?” I chuckled and glanced over to Balduin lazily. “Who do they think will believe this nonsense? They are so desperate for stories now, they make them up? They are so desperate, it is sad. They are starting to sound like a gossip blog at this point. I’m sure they didn’t even try to make it seem like he was in love with Odette. Instead, they used me? Because that is more scandalous? They’ve been grasping for straws ever since Odette’s sister stopped speaking to them, and we removed almost all those who spoke to the press from the palace.”

“Even so, sir, this now creates unnecessary drama.” He frowned.

I rolled my eyes, handing him back the tablet. “And like all the other drama, it will pass. Where is Iskandar, by the way?”

“It’s his day off, sir,” he replied.

“Yes, I know, but he often comes here anyway.” The man was a workaholic; he couldn’t help himself. Just like Arty, they never trusted other people to do the work they assigned others, so they came in to check.
