I would not be mad. I would take that as a compliment because when had any man or government been able to control the weather?

Knock.

Knock.

“Enter,” I said, checking my watch. Shit.

“Sir—”

“I know. I’m ready,” I said, walking to the door.

“Sir, we are going to be late. It may be better to move the speech at the union back by a half-hour,” Balduin said to me as we walked down the halls toward the awaiting car.

“A half-hour is a bit much. Relax, we can make it. We’ll just have Iskandar drive…” I paused as I glanced over my shoulder at the auburn-haired man staring back at me.

“Sir, do you want me to drive?” Bellamy Layland, Iskandar’s replacement, asked me, which threw me off longer than I liked.

His response, too, was off.

Had it been Iskandar, he would have said something like, “It’s a guard’s duty to guard and a driver’s duty to drive.”

“Sir?” Layland waited.

“It’s fine. Let’s go,” I replied, heading out the door.

“Ruegg Is Out”

Today King Galahad spoke to the local police and fire union at Avicourt as scheduled. Nothing seemed to be amiss except for a certain guard appeared to no longer be on his detail. We reached for comment from the palace but were told that Sir Ruegg was on vacation.

Some are saying Sir Ruegg may have confessed to his feelings and, of course, was let go, though the palace has not confirmed or denied this. Royal Biographer Lucienne Darlington-Whit tells us that the normal course of action for these things is to first put the party on leave or vacation, then in a few weeks, they will be retired.

We shall keep watch.

Chapter 32

I was a pregnant terror.

I knew it.

I couldn’t help it.

I was doing my best to manage it. However, I found myself overly sensitive and ready to kick anyone’s ass who came at me the wrong type of way…only to end up crying later. Honestly, before, everyone always made it seem like pregnancy was a bit…effortless? I mean, I knew about the vomiting part at the beginning and the giving birth pain at the end. However, the middle always just looked…fine. Just cute maternity photos and big bellies. I didn’t think anyone really spoke about how insane pregnancy could make you. I was sure once I looked back on this period in my life, I would cringe at myself. But until then, I was just going with my emotions, and my emotions were not flowing with this at all.

“Hire him back,” I ordered…the king, my husband, who was sitting across from me in the living room.

“Odette, we’ve talked about this.” He sighed, taking a seat beside the fireplace.

I glanced around at the butlers, Queen Elspeth, and Eliza, who were all in the living room with us. We’d just finished dinner, and throughout the whole thing, I just wanted to get those three words out. We hadn’t gotten a chance to talk today about the new series of articles, and I couldn’t wait another moment for us to be in our rooms.

“Fine. But I am informing you that I’ve given Wolfgang express orders to find Iskandar and bring him back. He’s not allowed to return to the palace until Iskandar is with him.”

“You did what?” he asked me.

“I sent Wolfgang to bring him back. And if it takes too long, I will send Balduin. And if they take too long, I’ll send Thelma, then Mr. Parsworth; one by one, I’ll send everyone in this palace after him. I don’t care how it looks. I will call an army if I need to,” I repeated, causing Eliza to snort.
