He grinned, biting into his pizza. “So, are you curious?”

“Why will none of you leave me be?” I questioned, wanting to smack him on the back of the head.

“Who else is bothering you?” he asked, proving he knew no one was bothering me. And almost like she knew she was being spoken about, my phone in my jacket began to buzz.

I ignored it.

“Aren’t you going to answer that?”

“It’s my mother.”

“How do you know when you never check?”

“She’s the only person who calls me on my personal number,” I said.

“Really? You only have one contact on your personal phone?”

“Three. My father—he never calls. My grandmother—I call her. My mother—she calls me…far too often.”

“What about your friends, exes?”

I didn’t answer.

“Fine, you won’t answer that. But why won’t you answer your mother?”

Still, I didn’t answer.

“I can find your mother’s phone number and call—”

I reached over and smacked him hard. “Try it, and I will bury you somewhere in this forest.”

“Ouch, you really get on edge when it comes to her,” he laughed. “You guys don’t get along?”

“No, we get along fine. However, she has taken it upon herself to try to set me up for the good of the Ruegg name.” I found myself talking more when he was around, and I wasn’t sure I liked that. I liked my privacy and quiet.

“Ah…I get it.” He nodded and ate again. “You are the last Ruegg. All the families in the order always try hard, just like the monarchy, to keep the family line going. My mom hasn’t gotten to that stage yet. They are too busy trying to up my status for now.”

“It’s because you are a kid.”

“I am twenty-four!”

“Like I said, a kid,” I repeated and ate.

“Don’t underestimate me. I’ve done things and—”

“Stay a kid, Wolfgang. Stay a kid.” For my sake, at least.

When I came the next day, the camp was empty.

There was no need to check because there was a letter taped to the door that simply read, “Go home, Wolfgang.”

I didn’t understand him at all.

I didn’t get why he had walked away from the thing he wanted. He said it was the rules, but that just felt like a good excuse.

It was frustrating.

He was freaking frustrating and his leaving all the time was so damn annoying! Now, what the hell was I supposed to do?
