“Seeing as how you’ve given me all your shares? Oh, believe me, I have more than enough for all the yogurt and face masks I could ever need.”

“Aren’t you going to be lonely?”

“The moment I am, I’ll call and bother you until I feel better.”

“And if you don’t get me?”

“I’ve already warned Wolfgang. If I call you twice, and I don’t hear back in an hour or two, the next time I see him, I am shaving his head.”

I laughed. “That’s mature.”

She laughed with me.

“I’m going to need to hear from you a lot. The people here…I think they are all fake,” I muttered, feeling myself calming down.

“Don’t forget you are fake now, too.”

“What? How so?”

“How so?” she mocked me, rolling her eyes. “Yesterday with you smiling and talking in such a sweet, soft voice. Meanwhile, I could tell you wanted to claw all of their eyes out.”

I didn’t reply because she was right. I guess I didn’t really have a choice but to be fake.

“Still, there was this one woman, Prudence, who I thought was cool, but apparently, she was all handsy with Gale. She was one of the women in the photo—”

“Were you expecting her to tell you in front of everyone?”

“No, but I know not to trust anyone easily now. She…” My voice drifted off as I realized something important…how did the press have only her name? And the timing felt…weird. The more I thought about it, the more the feeling came over me.

“What?”

Frowning, I looked over at her. “Everything you always told me about beauty pageants, how cruel women could be to one another, especially if they feel like they were humiliated applies in real life, too?”

“Beauty pageants are real life,” she said seriously, and I rolled my eyes, sitting up.

“Yesterday, this woman was trying to help me… In doing so, everyone sort of laughed at someone else. What if that woman wanted to get her back?”

“Oh. Nothing I like more than a good revenge story,” my mother said as she sat up as well. “You think that this was to get at her, not Gale?”

If that was the case, the person who was made into a joke…was Sabina.

“It looks like you are done whining. Good, I’ll let you handle with whatever drama you are dealing with. Just make sure you win,” she replied, standing up and adjusting her dress. “Now, more importantly, what do you think of this outfit?”

“You are going on a flight, Mom.”

“I am the mother of the Queen of Ersovia. I cannot be caught dead at the airport looking unfashionable.”

“You aren’t going to be seen. You are being directly taken onto the airplane and will be alone in first-class!”

“There are stewards on the plane, aren’t there?” She rolled her neck at me.

Knock.

Knock.

“Come in?”

“Wilhelmina, are you packed yet?” Mr. Greensboro asked, coming into the room. “Hello, Odette…sorry, Your Majesty.”
