“That too.” I grinned. “How badly did she rip into you?”

“Not as bad as I was thinking. In the end, it boiled down to my promising to take care of you, or she will come for me. It was already part of my plan to take care of you, so her threat didn’t phase me. But now that I’ve heard the story about the furs coats…”

I bit my lip to keep from breaking out in a fit. “She’s scared you?”

“If she is that committed to getting a coat, I cannot even imagine what she’d do for you.”

I nodded. “That’s right. You might have an army at your command, but I have my mom.”

“I am shaking.”

“Good.”

There was a pause before he spoke again. “Forgive me for dismissing your thought; it was wrong of me. You’re right. People change; I don’t know her. I’ll have people look into it tomorrow.”

I sat up from the bed. Even though it was dark, I could still see Gale’s eyes from the moonlight coming in. I lifted the sheets on the side of the bed.

“My time in the dog house is up?”

“So long as you behave.”

“I’m not sure about that behave part tonight.” He grinned as he got up. “I think we should make up thoroughly from this little rift.”

“Sure, what do you have in mind?”

He grinned and pounced on me!

“Gale!”

Chapter 10

“Wolfgang.”

“Wolfgang?”

“Huh?” I shook my head clear, looking at the queen, who stared back at me, worried. “Pardon me, Your Grace. What were you saying?”

“I asked if you were all right?” she questioned, adjusting her gloves as we walked down the palace stairs. “I’ve been meaning to say this. I understand you are adjusting, too. But you don’t have to treat me so differently now. I have your back.”

She was truly amazing.

“Thank you, ma’am.” I smiled, taking in her deep-red double-breasted-coat dress and the hat she wore on the side of her hair, pulled into a curly ponytail. “And forgive me for not saying so earlier, but you look beautiful.”

“Careful, Wolfgang. One would think you are trying to steal my wife,” the king said with a large grin on his face as he reached the bottom of the stairs. He was dressed in a dark-blue wool coat.

“Gale!” Odette laughed, shaking her head as she reached the bottom of the stairs. “Stop teasing him.”

“What? He stole my line,” he replied, lifting her hand up to his lips and kissing the back of it. “You look beautiful… See, it doesn’t feel right now that he’s said it first. I feel unoriginal.”

She rolled her eyes, but they sparkled and lit up. The way he looked back at her…they truly oozed love on every side, and it made me smile.

“Forgive me, sir.” I bowed my head to him. “From now on, I’ll lie or say nothing at all.”

“Brilliant! Let’s go with that!”

“Let’s not!” Odette exclaimed as he laughed. “I like your compliments, Wolfgang. Don’t lie.”

“Yes, Your Grace.”
