“Mom!”

I smiled. “Charles.”

He moved forward, giving her one.

She signed and then turned to her daughter. “Sign it.”

“I am not—”

“Augusta, grow up. Because if you don’t do this for me, I promise you, any time you speak out to anyone, I will speak out against you. Then everyone will wonder why you don’t have a good relationship with anyone in your family. Not even your mother. How do you think that will look?”

She stared at her for a long time before snatching the pen. “All of you are the worst! All of you are so freaking selfish—”

“Sign and whine, Augusta. Don’t just whine; move your hand,” I said as I drank.

She glared, scribbling her signature before she tossed the contract back into her mother’s arms and stomped to the door, slamming it behind her like the brat she was.

“Brilliant. Let me go get my things out of your chair,” I said, turning around to grab my coat, purse, and wine.

When I turned back, she was fixing her shirt and patting her cheeks. Ignoring her, I began my runway walk back to the door.

“Wilhelmina,” Yvonne called as she moved to the head of the table and took a seat, fixing her blouse.

“Yes?”

“Thank you.”

I shivered. “I will have to see you even less if you are going to be nice. It’s creepy. Bye.”

Leaving the room completely, I felt…free for the first time in a long time, and I nearly laughed at the looks of dumbstruck, awe, and horror from the rest of the board waiting outside the door.

“I don’t know why you all are looking at me like that. I told you it was personal for me from the beginning. Good luck, this might be very awkward for you all. Yvonne can hold a grudge, believe me. Charles, let’s go. I’m in the mood for yogurt.”

“Come in!” Yvonne called from inside, and I shrugged, walking to the elevators. This was no longer my problem.

“You could have let her sit in the loss for a bit longer. Maybe a day,” Charles said next to me.

“I wanted to, but I’m sure Augusta would have gone crying and screaming to anyone who would listen in the press,” I replied as we reached the elevators. “Odette has enough to deal with. I didn’t want them to do anything else. We all need to close this chapter and end the drama.”

“I’m proud of you.”

“I’m proud of me, too!” I laughed, getting on the elevator. “Now, exactly how much money am I going to get for the shares again?”

“Didn’t you hear me when I was explaining?”

“Of course, I didn’t; I was too excited. I had to figure out the best outfit and sweet talk all those old white people, plus I was worried about Odette. My brain can’t hold all the numbers, you know that.”

He sighed and just laughed at me. “Sometimes I worry if I wasn’t next to you, someone would just cheat you out of everything.”

I put on my sunglasses as I exited the elevator. “Just stay next to me then, Charles. Problem solved.”

“All Hail the King!”

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then this picture of our king should be worth twice as much…and it was not taken in the palace.
