She had no explanation for how Dracott’s closeness heightened her emotions. Maggie held her breath, anticipating his next hushed words. Her body tingled, waiting for him to wrap his arms around her. Her mouth trembled, waiting for the brush of his lips across hers.

“Well, for starters”—he drew her into his arms—“it gives me hope you will enjoy it when I . . . ”

Maggie waited for him to finish, but his gaze captured hers, leaving her in no doubt of his intentions. He meant to kiss her. Maggie’s eyelids drifted down when his lips softly brushed across hers. A soft sigh escaped, expressing her pleasure. Then his lips swiped across hers again with more pressure.

“Open your lips for me, my little minx,” Dracott commanded.

Dracott’s tongue stroked across her lips, coaxing them open. Maggie followed his demand, only to have her senses assaulted with the magic of his kiss. He left no doubt with Maggie of his true interest. One kiss turned into another, each more powerful than the last. Maggie’s knees weakened from the intensity of his passion.

Dracott caught Maggie against him when she clung to him. He meant to distract her with a kiss, but she overtook his peace of mind with the sweet nectar of her kisses. The little purrs vibrating against her throat inflamed his senses. They made him imagine the delights she would scream when he made love to her. He may have called her a little minx, but he knew she would be a hellcat between the bedsheets.

He kept drinking from her lips. Soon her tongue stroked along his, inviting him to lose himself in her. Everything else faded into the background. Only the two of them existed in this moment.

Soon, a faint call echoed behind him, tearing him out of the spell surrounding them. A warning, stating someone watched him. Not only him, but Maggie, too.

Dracott reluctantly pulled away. Maggie’s eyes drifted back open and Dracott wished to capture her gaze and lock it inside his heart forever. It held the look of innocence, wonder, and curiosity all wrapped up in one. A look that would lead to danger by involving her in his life. But it was out of necessity to keep her safe.

Once Maggie regained her balance, he took a step back, placing a respectable distance between them. Not that it mattered, considered they hid in the woods away from prying eyes. Even though the warning sent his way spoke otherwise. Whoever spied on them didn’t hold the motive of ruining Maggie’s reputation. No. He had his own nefarious motives. Ones Dracott needed to understand and stop before they ruined the lives of the ones he respected. Perhaps even loved.

Maggie held no experience when it came to a man kissing her, but she knew enough that something had distracted Dracott for him to end their kiss. And the distance he placed between them only proved her point. However, when her gaze met his, her eyes captured a different reason. Perhaps she was mistaken about his distraction. Because they reflected a passion he barely kept suppressed. Did their kiss affect him as greatly as it did her?

“Well?” he asked.

“Well what?” Maggie questioned right back.

He stepped into her space once more. “Did you enjoy my kiss?”

The husky baritone of his voice robbed her senses once again. Why did she lose track of herself in his presence? She wanted to answer him with a smirk and perhaps a flirtatious remark, but instead she stood before him like a tongue-tied wallflower. Any other gentleman she would have set him on his heel with a rebuke to keep his distance. However, she only wanted to beg Dracott to kiss her again.

Dracott wanted to draw Maggie on the ground and make love to her. He found her shyness amusing, and it endeared her to him even more.

A second warning lit the air and pushed Dracott to take action. He would have to wait for Maggie’s answer. He must get her back into the ballroom.

“Perhaps we should return. I am sure your family is wondering where you have wandered off to,” Dracott suggested.

Maggie shook herself out of her fog. She shivered from a chill slinking along her spine. The air changed around them with a sense of danger. Maggie glanced around. Nothing was different, but she felt someone watching them. She looked at Dracott and saw how his demeanor had changed. Yes, they should return with haste. She already needed to make up an excuse for her absence.

“Yes. I agree.” Maggie turned and started back to the manor, not waiting for Dracott to accompany her.

Dracott rushed after Maggie to keep her in sight. Her strides took her to the steps leading to the balcony before he reached her. She paused halfway up the stairs and glanced over her shoulder. He didn’t understand her stare. It held a mixture of vulnerability and curiosity. However, in the midst, it also held her distrust toward him. It caused him to pause as she continued on.

Waiting for her at the top of the balcony was her sister Eden. He nodded, and Eden returned his nod before guiding her sister back into the ballroom. While Eden thought he fulfilled his duty to Worth, it far surpassed what he and Maggie shared. After this evening, his stance as the assistant who blended into the background following his employer’s bidding would end. Tomorrow he must call on Lord Worthington and ask for permission to court Maggie.

But if the lady would agree to the courtship remained to be seen.
