“I don’t know.” I shrug, but his words slowly bring my confidence back. Maybe the past few weeks weren’t my imagination.

He takes a step closer to me and asks in a serious voice, “Marr, who am I?”

“Zander Teager, the CEO of Elixir. Did you forget?” I try to lighten the mood. I like playful Zander more than this broody man.

“Smart mouth.” He chuckles. “But I’m serious. What do you say we are? Friends?”

“Yes,” I reply, though I was hoping we were more than that.

“So, I’m your friend, like Oscar?” He cocks his head to the side.

“No. I mean, I—what do you want me to say?” I whisper, looking away from him.

“I want you to say what you feel, Marr,” he replies oh so gently.

I glance up at him. “Why don’t you tell me what you feel?”

“Me? I feel many things. I’m not sure you’re ready to hear them all, but I hope—I really hope—I’m more than a friend to you. I hope you feel the same way as I do.”

His whispered words create a thousand butterflies in my stomach. By the end of his sentence, I’m a buzzing, shaking mess of heat.

“What is it…that you…really feel?” My words come out as a stutter as I come close to hyperventilating.

“So you want me to do all the talking.” He raises an eyebrow and winks at me. “Not here. Someday when you’re with me, completely willing and mine, I’ll not only tell you but show you what I feel. But today, I’ll say that when you walked into this hall, wearing those boots and that beautiful dress, damn, you made my heart stop. I had to remember to breathe. You take my breath away every time you’re around. Ever since I got back to this cute little town, I’ve been dying to see these gorgeous blue eyes hidden behind the red glasses.”

Wow. I didn’t know someone could describe feelings so beautifully. It almost feels like a poem. His wonderful words make my heart flutter, dreaming about the possibilities of what he hasn’t said and enjoying what he has.

With my heart being in an entirely different world, I whisper, “I also liked the boots.”

“Yes, you look ravishing.”

“Zander!” My eyes widen at his brazen remark.

He finds me ravishing.

He chuckles. “What? I’m just trying to clear the air. I don’t want you friend zoning me again.”

“I didn’t friend zone you,” I reply in haste.

“Oh, really? You just said we’re friends.”

“But I meant like…close friends.”

“Like you and Oscar?”

What’s his deal with Oscar?

“No. Like me and no one. You’re…special,” I whisper under my breath. I’m not sure if he heard me.

But he did. “Thank you. So much effort to hear special from your smart mouth.”

“And…” I drawl.

“Yeesss.” He stretches that yes, making it sound sexy and seductive like he does on our phone calls. “And what Marr?”

“I like your tie. I was hoping you’d wear it today.” I tug on the sleeves of my dress.

His eyes blaze at my admission. “Why, couch girl, I’m glad my attire meets your approval. And I love your dress.”
