I gulp down the cold liquid before putting the incidences of the day into words.

“He took you to the Pegasus Gallop Farms?” When I nod, Kristy murmurs, “The hilltop is referred to as the most romantic place in Cherrywood.”

Her words don’t surprise me. Zander would never choose anything less than the best.

He only went wrong in the selection of his girlfriend.

His imperfect girlfriend.

“You think it was too soon?” Kristy’s fingers gently knead my neck muscles, trying to calm me down.

“I…don’t know. I just thought I would mess it up.” My fingers dig into my forehead as I whisper, “And I did.”

“What did Zander say when he dropped you off?”

“I didn’t let him speak. I made a run for the house. I can’t face him, Kristy, not after what happened.”

“What are you saying? You just froze when he was kissing you. It’s no big deal.”

“It was not…just a…kiss. It felt like he was bottling me inside him. He was holding me tight. His touch…” I shiver at the memories of the foreign sensations.

She looks at me with wide eyes, and my cheeks inflame in mixed embarrassment.

“He asked if this date made me forget all my previous dates. I feel like I’m cheating him, Kris. He is so…strong, powerful, and experienced, and I’m…me.”

Her hand stops me from tugging on the cuffs of my flannel shirt.

“You are cheating no one. He knows about you, about everything that’s important.”

She tries to make me believe in her words, like always, and maybe any other day, I would. But today, it’s different.

I saw Zander’s face. I saw his face when he realized what a dork I am. He took me on a date, to one of the best places, yet I freaked out.

There’s only so much a man can take, even I know this. He’ll soon realize how much work I am, if not today, then certainly later.

And once again, I’ll be left alone.

Before stepping out of my office, I poke my head out. When I see no one is in the corridor, I grab my empty water bottles and make a run for the coffee corner. I make sure that I dispose of them in the recycle bin at a time when this area is least busy. Yet, I hear some faint noises from inside.

I pause at the doorstep, making sure it isn’t Zander.

I’ve tried my best to keep my distance from him. I’m now waiting for him to stop calling and texting me and just realize that he’s wasting his time with me.

The voices in the coffee corner aren’t Zander’s, but they’re no better.

“Is it true that Rose and Zander Teager are an item?” It’s an unfamiliar female voice.

“I can’t believe it myself, but Zander said it in front of a room full of people.” I’m unable to recognize even this voice as the person starts the water, most liking filling a glass for themself. “You’ve worked with Rose. How is she?”

Crab!

My breath hitches at the question. In general, I try so hard to avoid other people’s opinion about me. I don’t know how their views and thoughts will affect me. But today, I can’t make myself turn around and hide back in my office.

“She’s nice. A little weird, but nice. Though I always thought she would end up with some geek like her.”

There’s a large slurping sound before the other person speaks. “I know! Zander Teager, the sexiest bachelor, fell for the office geek. This sounds like a Cinderella story.”
