Then again, I doubt he would bring food if that were the case. He would just unlock the door and let me go.

So why the dark circles under his eyes?

Then I remember the party and realize he was just up late for that. I square my shoulders, gearing up for a fight, even though I’m just as exhausted as he is. More so, what with the being held prisoner and all.

I screamed myself hoarse last night after the stranger left me, but no help ever came. They probably couldn’t hear me from way up here anyway.

“Morning,” he says stoically, his piercing blue eyes meeting mine.

I just continue to glare at him as a shiver runs down my spine. What is it about him that has me feeling all warm and tingly? Why is my stomach dancing with a thousand jumping beans right now? It’s not just fear, though there is a dangerous edge to whatever it is.

He sighs as he sets the tray down on the ground and slides it under the bars. “I brought you some breakfast.”

“Why are you doing this to me?” I blurt out.

“I thought you might be hungry.”

"That's not what I mean and you know it," I mutter, rolling my eyes. "Why am I locked away up here? What did I do? I deserve to know what crime I've committed."

He looks away from me and some emotion that I can't quite place crosses his features. I frown, trying to read his expression but that stoic look drops back into place before I can figure it out.

“Where are you from?” he asks instead of answering my questions. I just stare at him.

He stares right back, and suddenly it feels like we're in a blinking contest. The impossibly hot jerk blinks first, making me grin. He rolls his eyes back, which only has my smirk widening.

“I’m from Los Angeles. It’s a city in America,” I tell him.

“I know where Los Angeles is,” he snaps back.

“Oh, wonderful,” I say in my best chipper voice. I know I hit the right nerve when his eye starts to twitch. “Then you’ll know that the only way to get back there is by plane. My flight is tomorrow so I really need to wrap this whole prisoner thing up quickly,” I continue like he didn’t say anything at all.

He growls.

He legit growls at that statement, like me leaving this cell would be such a bad thing. I blink, taking a step back from the bars.

“I’m afraid you won’t be making your flight,” he says and now it’s my turn to growl.

Mine isn’t nearly as intimidating as his but it does the trick and surprises him. I can’t do much in this cell, but I’ll count catching him off guard as a small victory.

He blinks, seeming surprised by the sound, and the shocked look on his face makes me want to do it again.

"Maybe there's someone else in this castle I could talk to," I say pleasantly. He shakes his head.

“As King, I deal with all punishments. There’s no one here who would free you. Not without my permission.”

“You’re the King?”

Oh shit. What did I do to piss the king off? Is the dress code really that strict here in the Laurel Kingdom?

“I’m also Alpha,” he says. “Whatever the fuck that means. “My name’s Koda.”

He raises an eyebrow at me, obviously waiting for me to tell him my name but I keep my mouth shut.

He sighs, turning away from me.

“Why am I here? I should know the charges,” I tell him again, stepping forward and wrapping my hands around the cold bars.

He looks uncomfortable at being so close to me and he turns and starts to pace outside of my little prison. He clasps his hands behind his back, staring straight ahead and I can tell he’s thinking about how to word what he says next.
