We stopped for milkshakes at the Dairy Barn, my mom’s go-to treat for anything bad, before heading home. I focused on the things I could control as I sipped the cold treat.

I couldn't do anything but wait to see if my memories would return.

I couldn't do anything about my attraction for two guys.

But I could focus on healing and enjoying my books and dreams. I could hope everything else would work itself out later.

Dear Fish,

I’m curious how you got your name. Are you a good swimmer? Like a fish? Or perhaps you look like one? Hopefully it’s not because you smell like one.

I think it’s cool you have a friend who pushes you to do things. I sorta have that in my brother. We’re twins, but opposites. He’s the preppy, do gooder with the perfect grades. I’m the dark horse, always getting into trouble, and almost flunking out of school. But despite that, being a twin means I always have a built-in best friend. We do everything together, and he knows me better than anyone.

Or well, he used to. I kind of have a secret, but I don’t know how to share it.

I think that’s why I joined this program. The extra credit is also a bonus because I need it to pass. But I do think the concept is cool. It’s kind of refreshing to talk to someone you’ll never meet and share things with them. You might not be in the future, but it feels similar to send scribbled secrets.

I like comics too. What’s your favorite? I’ve been getting into graphic novels lately. Art is a passion of mine and they seem to capture me and speak to my artistic nature. I’m kind of a loner otherwise. We move around a lot, and this is the third school I’ve been to this year. My twin always makes friends easily, but not me. I just stick to myself and wait for us to pack up again.

Swim, swim Fish.

Blaze

Flipping the page,I found myself immersed in a book world. Being on bedrest at least gave me the perfect excuse to read. I had to read slower than usual, or I’d forget whole sections, but it was still better than staring at the wall. Currently, I was reading a book about a treasure hunt, and I already had ideas for my blog post.

“Knock, knock.”

Looking up, I found Simon in my doorway. Smiling, I motioned him in as I flipped the page. Si knew the drill now after years of friendship. I returned to my page, my rule to be allowed to finish the chapter while he found a spot on the bed. After countless years of fighting, we’d come to an agreement. He gave me the time to finish the section I was on, and I promised not to keep reading past it. Of course, the hard part was stopping.

Slowly, I tried to turn the page so he wouldn’t know I was starting a new chapter. But of course, he knew. Simon always knew.

“Not so fast,Lenn. If you start another chapter, then I’ll have to enact the code.”

Gasping, I clutched the book to my chest, a look of shocked outrage on my face. “You wouldn’t dare!”

“Oh, I sowoulddare.”

He smirked, and the only way to ignore the way my heart pitter pattered from the look was to distract. Or, at least, that was the excuse I was going with.

“I don’t believe you.”

Sitting back in my papasan chair, I flipped to the next page with all the sass I had. I flipped it so good, there had to be legions of people cheering me on with a “Yassss, Queen”.

I watched through my eyelashes, not even focused on my page anymore as Si’s jaw ticked, and his nostrils flared before he vaulted off the bed, surprising me. He braced his hands on my chair, trapping me, his rainfall scent enveloping me in the space.

“What was that, Lenn? Are you feelingfeistytoday?”

I ignored the way my breath came in and out, I ignored the way my heart raced, and I especially ignored the slickness growing between my legs at his move.

“Whatever do you mean?” Batting my eyelashes, I played the innocent card I used with the customers.

“Oh, I think you know exactly what I mean. It’s just unfortunate I’m going to have to remind you of thecode.”

Swallowing, my eyes never left his gray ones. They swirled thick with emotion, and I wanted to dive into them. I wasn’t sure who’d moved, perhaps both of us had, but as I prepared to respond back to him, I found us nose to nose. His breath was hot on my face at the proximity.

“I double-dog dare you.”

My lips ghosted over his as I taunted him, and I wondered if I’d hit my head harder than I’d realized. I’d flown past playing with fire and had lit the matches and thrown gasoline on them. Simon’s nostrils flared even more and when his eyes started to flutter closed, mine followed, anticipating a kiss on the horizon.
