“You’re too cute, sugar plum. Here, use my phone to find a place just in case.”

“Why?” I asked, raising my eyebrows.

“I don’t trust yours, and mine’s less likely to have been tampered with considering I’ve been out of the country. He knows too much, and has had too much access to you. I wouldn’t put it past him to have cloned your phone. He messed with your messages before when you were supposed to meet Blaze, so why wouldn’t he now? It’s the perfect way to get you alone by making you think you were meeting one of us.”

I shuddered at the thought. Zane had a point. I took his phone, figuring he'd be vague when he talked to his brother on mine. As he took care of informing Slade everything he’d worked for over the past four years was destroyed, I took care of what I needed to do—find a freaking shower.

I texted Darcie and asked if we could use her place for a while, briefly explaining what happened just in case Zane’s phone was bugged or even Darcie’s for that matter. She responded back quickly saying it was cool, and to be safe. I was about to return Zane’s phone when another message popped up.

Bro: I love you, Peach. I don’t know what I would’ve done if I lost you. We’ll figure this out together. We’re on our way back now. Your father is coming too. Don’t do anything stupid until we get there. This isn’t the time to run off being stubborn. Besides, no one really likes a hero. It’s the anti-heros that are all the rage.

ME: I love you too, bro, but I don’t think you should call me Peach. Kind of weird, don’t you think? It’s cute you think you’re some form of hero, bro.

Bro: Haha, funny, Peach. Your dad is talking to Thane, so I know it’s you. At least I know you’re okay if you’re making jokes.

ME: Honestly? I’m scared. But I’ll be okay. Be safe driving back. I don’t want to lose you either. We’re headed somewhere safe for now. I need a shower and maybe a nap.

Bro: We’ll meet you there or call you to meet back at the shop if your father wants to go there first. Do all those things. If you’re sleeping, then I’ll let you be because I really want to text you every minute to ensure you’re okay.

ME: I like when you wake me up.

Bro: It’s weird enough writing to my brother how much I love him, but I don’t think I can sext him, Peach. You’ll have to use your imagination. I’ll see you in a few hours.

ME: You’re no fun.

Bro: I’ll show you tonight how much fun I am

ME: Promise? *Winking emoji*

Bro: I promise you everything, Peach

Bro: Oh, and Peach?

ME: Yes?

Bro: I accept.

Smiling, I clutched the phone to my chest, as I whirled around. He looked at his tattoo.Warm butterflies fluttered to the surface at his answer. I’d basically asked him to be the music on my heart for infinity.

And he’d said yes. Slade ‘Tatzilla Alpha-hole’ Evans wanted to make music with me. Grinning wide, I looked through the gathered crowd and found Zane talking to a police officer. I walked over when I realized who it was, a smile on my face.

“Chief James from the Bowling Green Police Department has asked to be looped in. He believes this is connected to a fire that occurred there this morning. He’ll be taking point from their end and will be in touch. He knows where we will be staying, and due to the circumstances, we’re keeping it tight-lipped.”

“Understood. I’ll give him a call. He’s an old buddy of mine. He called when this one moved down here.”

“Hey, Officer Friendly.” I hugged him and grimaced, remembering my injuries. “Ouch, sorry. I forgot I was injured.”

“You okay, kiddo? No offense, but you look like shit.”

“Ha! Thanks so much. Why do people think it’s okay to say that if they put ‘no offense’ in front of it?” When he only held his hands up in surrender, I dropped it. “I’ve had better days, but I’ll be okay. Dad knows where I’ll be, so just call him if you have any more questions.”

“Will do, kiddo. Be safe. We’re all on the lookout for this psycho.”

“Thanks.”

Grabbing Zane’s hand, I pulled him with me, ready to be away from the mess. “You’re surprisingly calm.”

“I trust the police to take care of it. Nothing I can do at the moment, and if I don’t take a shower in the next thirty minutes, I might peel my skin off.”
