One thing that I was a pro at, was pushing memories away, keeping all the unwanted ones locked in a box in my mind. That skill had always been necessary to my existence. My visit with the Demon had blown the lid of that box way open though, and there were so many faces crawling through my head, I could have screamed.

“Are you okay?” a deep voice hesitantly asked, and I looked up to see one of the pledges standing there.

“Peachy,” I muttered as I struggled to my feet, feeling five years old at that moment.

He blocked the door with his body, and for a moment, I contemplated holding him at knife point so I could finally get the code.

But I decided against it. I was way too exhausted, and the guys would just end up changing the code anyway.

The pledge must have had the idiotic notion that I wanted to talk, because once we’d gotten inside the Sphinx, he followed me down the hall, chattering away. About what I couldn’t tell you, I’d blocked it out. I got to my door and went to unlock it, and then I realized he was still hovering there.

“Listen Chris—” I began.

“My name’s Derek,” he pointed out unhelpfully.

I wasn’t going to remember that. I’d taken to calling them all “Chris” in my head…and to their face. They may have been Sphinx members, but they were still what Cain referred to as “sheep.” And “sheep” didn’t need a name.

“Is there something you need?” I asked impatiently, way too tired for this conversation. My exhaustion was making me way nicer than I usually would have been.

“I was wondering if you wanted to hang out,” he said, leaning against the wall and trying to look cool.

“Hang out,” I repeated blankly. My mind not computing what he was saying.

“Like grab dinner or something.” He had a cocky smile on his face, like I was a sure thing, and he was doing me a favor by asking me out.

“Are you stupid, pledge? Do you want her to bash your brains out?” barked Stellan as he came down the hallway.

Chris—I mean Derek, didn’t look so cocky any more. In fact, he was cowering right now and I was pretty sure that he was shaking. I eyed Stellan, ignoring the pang of tired lust in my gut that always sparked up when he was near me.

I didn’t think Stellan was that scary. But this guy looked like he was about to pee his pants. I sniffed the air gingerly. He might have peed a little already.

“I—” he squeaked, before he darted off down the hall without another word or look back.

I put my hand exaggeratedly on my chest. “I can’t believe you just chased off my suitor,” I said sarcastically.

Stellan rolled his eyes, but there was a ghost of a smile on his pretty lips.

“Seems like I already have enough competition. Wouldn’t want to add anyone else to the list.”

My mouth dropped as he leaned closer to me, his finger tracing the patch of skin between my shirt and pants, and sending tingles sparking across my skin.

His hand that wasn’t on my waist came up and gently brushed against my lower lip. I couldn’t stop the hitch in my breath.

If I wasn’t so freaking tired, I might have been tempted to suck on his finger, or something else ridiculous like that.

But I was. So this conversation needed to be over. I didn’t have the energy to be taken in the hallway.

Even though the idea of human touch to soothe my frayed edges sounded really fucking good at the moment.

I practically fell through the door as I abruptly unlocked it and ripped myself away from his touch.

“See you later,” I called as I slammed the door in his stunned face. I leaned against it and listened, noting that he stood there for at least a minute more before he slowly walked away.

I was shaking from exhaustion as I stumbled to my bed, my body past the point of no return. I didn’t bother changing, I just threw myself on top of the covers and almost immediately fell asleep.

“Inject just a little bit at first, Delilah. I want him to still be able to scream when we start,” the Demon ordered. I tried to control the shaking of my hands as I did my best to push only a small amount of the poison in. The sweat on my hands wasn’t helping the task either.

My stomach was hurting. It had been hurting all day. And having this man tied up, practically naked, was a lot for me to handle.
