“It was worse tonight,” he murmured as he softly stroked my hair. “I wasn’t even in my room and I heard your screams.”

I probably should have cared that a bunch of the Sphinx douchebags had heard me, but I couldn’t find it in myself.

“Sometimes it’s hard to remember what’s real and what’s just a dream. But this one…I know it happened. But I…I do everything I can not to think about it,” I confessed.

“It was that bad?” he asked, his fingers tracing patterns on my skin.

I nodded, unable to answer because the tears were coming faster again.

“What do you think triggered it?”

I hesitated, not sure if I wanted to tell him where I’d been. That I’d seenhim.

But they hated me already, right? And honestly…I just needed to tell someone. I needed to purge at least some of the poison out from under my skin.

“I saw him today.” My voice was rough and scratchy from crying so hard.

He stiffened against me briefly before relaxing again.

“The Demon?” he asked. “Why?” I grabbed his hand off my hip and clenched it tightly in mine, pulling it against my heart.

“There’s more footage,” I whispered, my soul sounding broken even to my own ears. “And I just—I’m afraid that it will be too much.”

He was quiet for so long, I almost thought he’d somehow fallen asleep.

“Did you ever want to do it?” he finally asked, and my whole body shuddered at the question.

Because sometimes, I wasn’t really sure.

So I just didn’t answer, and he didn’t ask me again. He just held me tightly there in the dark, and eventually, I fell asleep wrapped in his arms.

And the only dreams I had were of a little boy with dark hair and amber eyes, and a woman who sang rock songs to him to get him to sleep.

Chapter18

Aurora

Iwas lying on my stomach on my bed, trying to comprehend the math problem in front of me, when someone began pounding on my door, making me jump.

“Aurora! Open the fucking door,” called Remington, banging again.

Hopping off my bed, I walked over to the door, a thread of worry pulling at my chest with the absolute panic in his voice.

I unlocked it, and it almost hit me in the face as he pushed it open the second he heard the lock click.

I opened my mouth to yell at him, but then I really took him in.

He looked like a mess.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, feeling like I needed to grab my favorite knife and start cutting people.

“My aunt just called. My mother never made it to rehab. Which wouldn’t have been so surprising…until I got this.” He lifted up his phone to show me a grainy video of a woman with her hands tied behind her back and a gag in her mouth. Remington’s hands were shaking as he held the phone.

“That’s your mother?” I pressed softly, disgust curdling in my stomach.

I went around the side of the bed and kneeled down, pulling on the plank I’d loosened so I could store more of my stuff. I basically had things hidden all over the room at this point.

“What are you—Okay. Wow,” he said as I pulled out a long, serrated knife and then hesitated for half a second before grabbing a gun as well.
