The entire idea of a sex club made me uncomfortable. And that sex club in particular–just getting a glimpse of all the equipment in those rooms last night…and seeing enough bloated rich guy sex to last me the rest of my life…sigh, I was in no hurry to return.

But I needed to find out everything I could about that place–and if there were no cameras to capture this spanking, I could humor Cain and help him with his, ah, business venture. I’d won Remington over; I wouldn’t mind bringing the biggest psycho I knew onto my team.

“I’ll consider it,” I promised.

Jenna was waiting for me outside my class. She grabbed my arm and dragged me away. “You don’t need to go to Physics today.”

“I definitely do,” I said. “For someone who knows how to make a lot of neurotoxins, you’d think I’d be a science nerd. But I can’t afford to miss a lecture.”

“I figured out how to get you into the Sphinx.” Her eyes glinted, and as my gaze snapped to hers, she nodded, grinning. “You can be a full-fledged member of the secret society. That would give you some leverage if you have to live in that house with them, wouldn’t it?”

“It would make them crazy,” I said. “I’m in love with this idea. But how?”

She dragged me off with her to the library. The deep silence of the shelves and carrels made me nervous now, after the note that had been left on my books. I should really ask Stellan if he’d left that for me, but it felt like a lifetime ago at this point. It felt different today though, walking in with a friend.

Especially if that friend was loud and bubbly and drew disparaging glances from librarians.

I shushed her as we sat down in chairs opposite each other. “It’s a secret society. We’re supposed to keep it a secret,” I said with a laugh.

She paged through the requirements with me.

“Where did you find this?”

“Some stupid pledge accidentally returned his copy of their rule book in his stack of library books,” she said with a laugh. “Look at this.” She flipped to the front of the book. “It’s been signed by every pledge who took possession of it–it’s been in circulation at the Sphinx for sixty-three years.”

I yanked my hand away from the book. “I can only imagine what’s on the pages.”

She pulled a face. “Well… look at the requirements. You’re supposed to fulfill a certain number of hours of service to the Sphinx before you can officially become a member. Shed blood for them.”

“Hours.” I drummed my fingertips against the tabletop. “Does running for their entertainment count?”

She frowned. “Do I want to ask what’s going on in the Sphinx? Do rich people have a treadmill kink?”

“You have to do a favor for at least two senior members.”

She grinned. “I bet you’ve done them a lot of favors.”

I thought of how I’d helped Remington, then Cain’s request. “I think I can manage that one.”

“There’s a skill test on initiation day. And last but not least,” she said, flipping to a thick section of the book. “You have to memorize all these rules and shit.”

I groaned.Killing someone to protect Remy’s family was one thing. Going to Cain’s sex club to help him out was one thing. But reading this whole fucking book…that was a lot of homework.

Chapter20

Aurora

That afternoon, I was walking back from class toward the Sphinx when Remington’s Rolls-Royce Phantom rolled by. I almost raised my hand to wave like a dork, as if I actually was dating these guys.

The car stopped abruptly, as if Remy were picking me up. I caught a glimpse of Pax in the passenger seat, looking bored, as if he’d been dragged along on an errand.

But it was Cain who bounded out of the driver’s seat, and before I could react with surprise, he slung me over his shoulder again.

Without fanfare, Cain dropped me into the trunk of the Rolls.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” I shouted, kicking out at him; I hit him square in the chest, but it didn’t even rock his wall of muscle. I tried to scramble out of the trunk, but he was already closing it. The world suddenly went dark and muffled.
