Could it really be that simple? We love each other and get married? What about all the things we haven’t discussed like where we are going to live, or finances and such. Aren’t they important? They weren’t when we were young, so why am I stressing about them now? Am I really just running like he did long ago? I knew we’d never be given a third chance. I couldn’t walk away from this one.

Carlie chimed in. “Valentina, I know you don’t know me, but I know my brother. If he wasn’t sure about wanting to marry you, he wouldn’t have asked. Yes, there have been difficulties in the past, but I know he’s committed to making you happy. All you have to do is allow him to.”

“And you really believe he can live in Rhode Island with me?” I asked.

“I do. Will it be easy for him? No. But the love you two have is strong, and together he will be okay. You both will be,” she stated.

“Thank you, Carlie.” I looked around the table and asked, “This is really happening, isn’t it?”

“Not if we don’t get moving,” Abby said. “Are you coming, Grandma?”

“No. I’m going to stay and enjoy my dinner with the captain,” she replied.

That shocked me. “Mom, I’m getting married, and you don’t want to come and help me get ready?”

She smiled. “I think you two can use some mother-daughter time. But don’t worry, I’ll see you at the wedding.”

I looked around the table and they all seemed to agree with my mom. Then, Carlie said, “It seems like Abby has everything under control. At least she will if you go.”

Abby dragged me away, and I was too stunned to even speak but before I knew it, we were entering her cabin.

I’m getting married.

I looked down at my ring.

Talk about the shortest engagement. Our honeymoon better last longer than this.

When I looked up, I saw a wedding dress hanging up. It was one I had admired many times hanging in the window of our local bridal shop. I chuckled and Abby asked, “Something funny?”

“No. Just wondering how did you pull that off? It’s not even wrinkled.”

“Betty is amazing. She had it all taken care of while we were getting ready for dinner. Now quit asking questions, and let’s get you dressed,” Abby said.

Normally I’d have some choice words about being manipulated, but right now, I was overwhelmed with emotion and my heart was filled with love.

I’m really getting married.
