And singles’ cruise another?

“If you’d like, I can bring the book back to you once it has been read,” I offered.

“It’s a signed ARC. I highly doubt they will want to part with that book.”

I normally donated my sister’s books after I read them, but apparently Valentina had no clue the author was my sister. I guess pen names really work.

“You never know,” I said.

“Well, you’d better go deliver it. I know I’d be in my bed reading it right now if I could,” she sighed.

I almost felt bad about taking it. But how would I explain leaving it with her? I wasn’t about to admit it was mine to lend.

Tucking the book under my arm I said, “Enjoy your night, Valentina. And I hope you find the one you’re looking for.”

She opened her mouth as though she was about to say something important, but just replied, “You too, Rick.”

When she closed her door, I waited a second before leaving. I’d wanted to see her again for so long, and now I had. But I wasn’t a guest, and the management pressured us to remain professional, and to refrain from getting personally involved with the passengers. If I spent too much time with Valentina, I’d be getting involved all right.

A flame that neither time nor distance could extinguish. It wouldn’t take much to turn it into a roaring fire. The look in her eyes confirmed it. All the seawater in the world wouldn’t be able to put it out.
