“What do you think?” I asked.

“That you must be a professional singer.”

“No, I’m an elementary school principal,” I admitted.

“A very talented one. The owner was so impressed he just said dinner was on him.”

I blushed. “I kind of got carried away but I’ve never done this before. I mean sang karaoke before. Strange, I have my PhD in education, but when I first went to college, I studied music. I dreamt about being on Broadway someday.”

“What stopped you?” he asked.

“Simple. Stage fright.”

“You didn’t seem nervous at all,” Mikal said.

“I think I was more afraid of hearing the other guy sing than singing myself. And I guess over the years having to lead the singing at school functions has helped. Although children can be some of the toughest critics,” I said truthfully.

“Don’t I know it. They say exactly what is on their mind and don’t hold anything back,” he said.

“Do you have children?” I ask.

“No. I’ve been a bachelor all my life. How about you,” he asked.

“Besides all the children at the school, I have one son who is married but no grandchildren as of yet” I didn’t want to mention my late husband. Since I wasn’t looking for marriage, just companionship, it wasn’t a red flag that at his age Mikal had never been married before.

“Does he live in Rhode Island too?” he questioned.

“No. He’s in the Air Force and unfortunately stationed abroad right now. I’m hoping to get to see them at least once this summer.”

“It’s only July. You’ve got time,” he said.

“Funny, but that is one thing that seems to slip away quickly.”

“I have a feeling that you’re the type of woman who will make it happen if you want it to,” he stated.

You are so right.

I didn’t want the conversation to go so deep and ruin this relaxed mood. “It’s getting late,” I said, changing the topic.

“It is. Are you ready to head home?” he asked. I nodded. As we got up from the table he added, “I’m glad you volunteered to sing for us all tonight.”

“I’m glad you enjoyed it.” I’m just surprised I did too.

“I can’t remember the last time I had such an entertaining evening. Thank you, Trisha.”

“Thank you for inviting me, Mikal.”

As we left the restaurant, I couldn’t wait to tell Penny about this first date. It was anything, but boring.

And he’s already asked me out for a second one.
