Exactly.

“Maybe.”

She smiled. “You just proved my point.”

I cocked a brow. “What are you talking about?”

“You’re protective over her. You don’t want to lose her.” She turned to Carson and asked, “What do you think? Do you think Trisha is the one?”

Carson shrugged. “I don’t meddle in people’s business.”

Dottie laughed. “That’s a first. You have been in Mikal’s business since we were all young.”

“This is different,” Carson said.

“Because it’s not you butting in?” Dottie asked.

Carson looked at me and said, “See what you did? I’m going to have to hear about this until you agree to have dinner with us.”

“How is that my problem?” I chuckled.

“Because we’re friends and you’re supposed to have my back,” he replied.

“I’m smart enough not to get between the two of you,” I said.

“And smart enough to know that if you don’t agree to have dinner with us, I’ll find a way to ‘bump into’ Trisha myself and invite her,” Dottie warned.

“You wouldn’t?” I panicked.

Carson nodded. “Welcome to my world.”

Damn it.

“Fine. I’ll ask, but I’m making no promises. And if she agrees, we are not coming here. We go somewhere neutral.” Someplace that you’ll be on your best behavior.

“That works for me,” Dottie said. “What time should we plan on meeting? I can make the reservations now.”

“I haven’t even asked,” I reminded her.

She grinned. “She’s going to say yes. Trust me. Women know these things.”

What I knew was I regretted still showing up this morning. I wanted to see Trisha tonight and we had discussed that we would meet, but hadn’t set anything in stone. My plans never included sharing her with my friends.

“Why don’t you give her a call now and ask?” Dottie prodded.

Carson sat smiling, thankful that Dottie was driving me crazy instead of him.

“I’m sure she’s still sleeping,” I said.

“It’s nine in the morning. Why would she be in bed?” Dottie asked. Then peered at me and added, “Unless she didn’t get much sleep last night.”

“I wouldn’t know,” I lied. “I just assume that she is on vacation and most people sleep in.”

Dottie nodded. “That’s true. But I expect you to call us with a definitive plan by noon.”

I got up from the table and turned to Carson, “I never thought I’d meet someone as persistent as you. But right now, I’m grateful Dottie wasn’t my manager, or I would still be stuck working full-time.”

“It’s not my fault you asked my husband instead of me. Then again, I can’t picture Carson home raising the children while I traveled the world with you either,” she said.
