“Military bases, hospitals and veteran homes. That’s the start at least. But that means I need to travel,” I said.

She nodded. “When will you be leaving?” she asked.

“In a couple of weeks. I am not sure where I will be going yet. I believe that I’ll be gone a week at a time, that’s all.”

“That’s all?” she echoed.

She wasn’t asking me to stay, asking me not to do this. All she seemed to want to know was that I’d be coming home.

“I wish you could come with me.”

She smiled and asked, “As your assistant?”

I shook my head. “As my wife.”

Those words hadn’t been planned. I’d never even thought about getting married. But once I said them, I knew I meant it. I didn’t want to take it back.

“What did you say?” She asked me to repeat it.

If the words came through my lips, then I knew that I was making this official. I was asking her to be my wife.

“Trisha, I do not have a ring. And we never discussed what we were going to do, as in our future. Please forgive me if I’m moving too quickly, but I love you. I want to spend the rest of my life putting a smile on your lovely face. I would be honored if you would consider becoming my wife,” I said.

She blinked. “You’re asking me to marry you?”

“Yes, I am. Don’t feel like you need to respond right now. It’s okay if you need to think about it,” I said.

“Why would I need to do that? I’m in love with you. I also never pictured myself getting married again, but that changed when I met you. You’re the puzzle piece that I need. But Mikal, I must ask you something first.”

“What do you want to know?”

“Would you still want to marry me if I can’t travel with you? I mean, I have my job here. And when I do get a vacation, I want to be able to go visit my grandchildren.”

I had only been joking about her traveling with me. The military would have needed to be consulted first. But the fact that she didn’t say no, had me feeling confident that maybe she would one day.

“Your being home waiting for me will be all I need to make sure I come back,” I said. Lifting her hand to my lips, I kissed her fingers. “You never answered my question. Will you marry me?”

I held my breath waiting. Unsure of what her response would be. But the smile on her face, the tears in her eyes, I knew.

“I don’t want to be your assistant on the nights and the weekends. I want the full-time job. I want to be your wife,” she said.

I pulled her into my arms and said, “I love you, Trisha.”

“I love you too. But I have another question,” she said.

“Anything,” I replied.

“Do you think dinner can wait a little longer? I want to go back to bed.”

“Still tired?” I asked.

“Not one bit,” she smiled, turned around and headed to the bedroom. But while still in sight, she dropped the bathrobe on the floor, leaving me to watch her naked ass strut out of the room.

Fuck yeah.

I had everything I could want. A woman who loves me and who’s not afraid to show it.

Pulling off my shirt I chased after her.

Tonight, I make love to her. Tomorrow, I go ring shopping.
