Chapter 9

Reesa

I stood on my hotel room balcony searching the parking lot for Finn’s vehicle, but it wasn’t there. It shouldn’t surprise me. Finn had to be at the hospital so early, and the Henderson jet would have us high in the sky before he was off work. He also mentioned that he had business to address.

He wasn’t the only one playing catch-up after spending practically the entire day together yesterday. It had felt amazing just driving without a destination or watching the time. For a moment, I had forgotten where I was. Who I was. For a brief while, we were just two people without responsibilities to weigh us down.

By the end of the day, our connection was even stronger. He promised we would see each other again but couldn’t commit as to when. I miss him already and I’m not even gone yet.

There was a knock on my door and I went inside to answer it.

“Good morning,” I said, letting Logan in. “Are you here to make sure I’m packed and ready to go?” Because I’m far from being prepared to leave.

“I met with Finn earlier. There were a few things we needed to discuss.”

And you didn’t want me there to discuss them?I appreciated Logan’s help, but the final decision was mine to make. Finn and I had reached an agreement, one I hadn’t shared with anyone yet, and for good reason, too. Because I don’t want to hear all the reasons this isn’t a good idea.

Right now all I wanted was to know what their meeting today was about. Was I one of the topics? I wasn’t sure if I wanted to be or not. “I hope you were not lecturing him about me again.”

“I did not bring you up once. Finn, on the other hand, did - several times.” Logan handed me the paper bag that he’d been carrying. “He said you might need this when you go home.”

I set the bag down on the table and opened it. When I saw what was inside, I felt a smile creep across my face. It was a shamrock plant like we’d seen at a florist’s shop yesterday.

“Wow. This is so thoughtful,” I said.

“Guess he thinks you need some luck,” Logan teased.

I shot him a warning look. “Really Dr. Henderson? Because this plant is the perfect gift from someone in Finn’s field. Did you know that both shamrocks and clovers have medical benefits? It’s a natural blood thinner and reduces plaque in our arteries. Which, of course, helps to prevent heart attacks and strokes.”

Logan grinned. “Also aids in reducing inflammation associated with arthritis. Sounds like someone has been studying plants.”

“It just came up in a conversation,” I said.

“An odd conversation, I’d say.”

“No. The florist was trying to sell me so many exotic plants, but I informed her I can’t keep anything alive. She said that the shamrock is easy to grow. That’s when Finn provided a list of their health benefits as well. We were talking so much that I left the shop without ever purchasing one.”

But he knew how much I wanted it.

With everything else on his plate, somehow, he still found time to do something extraordinarily sweet for me.

“You seem very…fond of him,” Logan stated.

I am.

That was an emotion I needed to conceal. “He’s a kind person. I believe he is the perfect replacement for you.”

Logan crossed his arms and stared at me. “You’re really dead set on hiring him, aren’t you?” he asked.

“Is there a reason I shouldn’t? Before now, you have only touted his exceptional record,” I reminded him.

“It’s not his record I’m worried about.”

“Oh, please do not tell me you think he’s distracting me from my duties and he will become more of a liability than an asset to both Tabiq and me,” I blurted.

Logan’s eyes widened. “That’s not at all what I was going to say, but those might be valid points, since you brought them up. Obviously, he’s on your mind. Maybe a little too much.”

I could kick myself for falling into that trap.I knew better than to offer information. Instead, I should’ve asked Logan why he was questioning my choice. Maybe it wasn’t too late to derail this line of comments.
