Chapter 18

Finn

I was happy Reesa was allowing me to be here for her, but this wasn’t how I expected to meet her family. When I offered to come with her, I thought I’d be at the hotel while she visited them at the hospital. But she insisted that I come with her.

That had put a kink in my plans. I was hoping to touch base with Bennett and see if he’d learned anything. The last thing he’d said to me was they had obtained the names of the individuals who were threatening her security team. I had no idea if a plan of attack was in place. Bennett was tightlipped on certain things.

It sucked, but I knew this was the same helpless feeling the families of my patients experienced when they were in the waiting room. They had to trust me to know what I was doing, and I’d update them after it was over.

Bennett had said that the timing was perfect for Reesa to leave Tabiq. There was no way Jasper had been involved in that happening. Alissa didn’t hurt herself or jeopardize their child on purpose. It was the universe lining up, just like it did when I sat at the bar at O’Malley’s. Sometimes you can’t explain it, but it is meant to be.

Part of me felt guilty for not informing Reesa about what was going on. But if she knew, she’d be stressed even more than she already was. There was no point in having her looking over her shoulder 24/7 if she didn’t need to. But if we returned to Tabiq, and Bennett hadn’t eliminated the threat, it might be time for us to sit down and tell her everything.

At least we have some time before we need to worry about that.

That wasn’t the only thing I was keeping from Reesa. Yesterday when I was packing, I called Murray and let him know I needed a week extension on my leave. Something had come up and I wasn’t returning to Ireland on the date expected. He was far from pleased and actually accused me of behaving like Dr. Snyder. That comment alone made me not want to return to working for him. It was time for me to move on, but I wasn’t sure yet if Tabiq was where I was going to relocate to.

At some point I was going to need to sit down with Reesa and talk this all out. Everything. From what Bennett was doing, to the job, and most of all, our feelings. This wasn’t an affair, a one-night stand. The connection between us was real. We both were avoiding admitting that, but maybe once we were alone, settled, we could talk. Since we were about to enter the hospital, it was just another thing that would need to wait.

“Do you think we will be able to see the baby?” she asked as we walked through the entrance of the hospital.

I shrugged. “It depends if she is still in the NICU. Usually that is parents only.”

“I can’t wait to see her, to see them.” She reached out and grabbed hold of my hand. “I really can’t thank you enough for coming with me.”

I smiled down at her and said, “I’m glad you said yes. But if you hadn’t, I know you’d have been fine. You’re one of the strongest women I know.”

She huffed. “That’s just the exterior that I want people to see. Inside, I’m a bundle of nerves.”

We got inside the elevator and the doors closed. I took advantage of the little time alone. “I would disagree. The woman I held in my arms last night was bold and confident.”

She blushed. “That’s different.”

“How?” I asked.

“I was afraid that if I didn’t, you might end up going home and the only thing I’d get was a kiss.”

I pulled her close and said, “Although your kisses are sweet, I see your point.” Before the elevator doors opened again, I kissed her lightly. “Now, let’s change the subject because I really don’t want to meet your brother with a bulge in my pants.”

Reesa looked down, then snickered. “Sorry about that.”

I released her and said, “I don’t think you are.”

We headed down the hallway to the unit. I needed to think of anything besides Reesa, for now at least.

Instantly, I went into doctor mode and started taking in all my surroundings. I was impressed with the amount of security the hospital had in place. Visitors needed to call the nurse’s station and identify themselves before someone would verify and let them in. It was great to see what lengths the hospital went to in order to protect the newborns and the parents. It also reminded me how unprotected Reesa was back in Tabiq. Not once had anyone stopped me at the gate. It was way too easy for anyone who wanted to do her harm.

I wonder how much Jasper knows of what is happening in Tabiq. Does he know what danger she’s in?

This was not the time to ask.

We arrived at their room and Reesa knocked on the door. When Jasper opened the door, I saw the resemblance immediately. Reesa pushed into the room and hugged her brother.

“Congratulations! Jasper, this is Finn. Finn, this is my younger brother that I told you about,” she said.

We exchanged greetings, and then she introduced me to Alissa, who was lying in the bed.

“I can’t believe she talked you into coming all this way with her,” Jasper said.
