When he spotted me in the lobby, Liam looked around, approached me, and whispered, “What are you doing here?”

“I work here,” I smiled as though our meeting meant nothing to me, and I wasn’t flustered in the least. “And I have a message from your brother.”

“You were with my brother? Why?” he questioned.

“He’s my boss.” I didn’t need to explain myself to him. And it’d be nice if he looked a little happy to see me. “I was asked to give you a message,” I stated in a dry, uncaring tone.

“What is that?”

“He’s been called away for an emergency. He asked you to wait for him in his office,” I said.

“Thanks. And sorry for being so…gruff.”

“I get it. No explanation needed,” I replied. I want one, because I sure don’t understand it, even if I said I do.

“It’s just we agreed that…we would keep this a secret,” he said softly.

“And you don’t hear me talking about it, do you?” I asked.

“No. But when I heard you were with my brother, I thought…never mind what I thought. I was wrong and I’m sorry,” Liam said.

When we got to Finn’s office I said, “I told you, I don’t want anyone to know any more than you do.”

“Good.”

“He also wanted me to tell you that he needs your help with the wedding.”

“I’ve asked him several times if I can help and he said he has it all under control,” he said in exasperation.

“He might have, but there’s been a change. He needs you to find pipers to play at the wedding.”

“Pipers? Do you mean bagpipers?” he asked, raising a brow.

I chuckled. “Yes. That’s it. But I really have no idea what bagpipers are. Never even heard of them.”

“Then come in and sit. I’ll find some on the internet and play it for you,” he offered.

“Thanks, but I have work to do.”

“You can’t come in even for a few minutes?” he asked. “Because I’ve wanted to talk to you.”

And yet I haven’t heard from you.

The way he was looking at me was like how he looked at me last night. As though there was only us, and nothing else mattered. It made me want to be in his arms again, but now was not the time. “Liam, I am at work. My patients need me.” And I don’t want to get caught in the chief of staff’s office with the door closed.

“I understand. I haven’t forgotten the TLC you gave me. I’d almost be willing to get stabbed again just to have you nurse me back to health,” he joked.

“Don’t even think such a thing,” I said, remembering how horrible it was seeing him bleeding.

He smiled. “Maybe tonight then?” he asked.

I wanted to tell him no. That I had plans. But I couldn’t. I’d been waiting to hear him ask since we parted last night. “I have some work to do, but I can get away for a short time.”

Liam pulled me close and kissed me briefly. I was too shocked to stop him, and even though I said I didn’t want it, the kiss ended way too quickly and my body yearned for so much more. But I wasn’t about to fall back into his arms. No matter how much I wanted him, I want more than just sex. But damn, that sex was amazing.

I needed to stop this. “Liam, the door was open. Anyone could’ve seen,” I snapped.

“It was a quick kiss. That’s all.”
