Fun? No. Embarrassing? Probably.

We heard a car door open and close, and I knew that Shaun and Liam would be here any moment. I didn’t really care what we were doing tonight. All I wanted was what I already had. An excuse to see each other again.

“Why don’t you go and greet Liam while I carry all this into the dining room?” Morgan said.

“No. I am not leaving you to do all the work. Besides, I told you, I don’t want to see him,” I said.

“I heard what you said. I just don’t believe you. And for the record, you don’t believe it either,” she stated, picking up a couple of bowls and leaving me alone in the kitchen.

I needed a minute to gain my composure before following her. What was I supposed to say to him? I hadn’t left things on a good note. I had snapped at him, and for what? Morgan just said the same thing to me, and I didn’t tell her I don’t want to associate with her. So why am I being so hard on Liam?

Maybe I was getting scared of my feelings. They were growing stronger, and it was going to hurt like heck when he was no longer part of my life. Could I do what Morgan suggested and just enjoy this time with him? Wouldn’t that make my feelings grow more intense?

I’ll see him tonight, because it’s their house and they invited him. But no more. My heart won’t be able to take it if I do.

Before I could even grab food to carry to the other room, Liam entered.

“Hi, how are you doing?” he asked.

“I’m alright. I just need to bring these to Morgan,” I replied, picking up a bowl of corn chips and another of seasoned ground beef.

“She sent me in here to help you. What can I carry?” he asked.

So, this is how it’s going to be. I see it isn’t only Shaun who has an agenda tonight.

I handed him the bowls that were in my hands and said, “You can bring these.” Then I turned around to grab more. I thought he’d have left, but instead he was standing in the same spot. “I thought you were here to help,” I said.

“I was sent to help, but I’m here because you’re here. I hope you’re not angry to see me,” he said.

“Liam, I don’t hate you.” Totally opposite.

“That’s good to know. But how do you feel about my being here? Did you want me to leave?”

“Would you, if I said yes?” I asked.

“I’m not here for Shaun or Morgan. So to answer your question, I’d leave.”

I looked into his eyes and knew he was telling me the truth. “I want you to stay.” Might as well be honest myself.

“Good. I know you don’t want to come back to the hotel with me, but I was hoping that we could find a few minutes to talk.”

“I’m sure we can manage that. But right now, the food is getting cold and we ladies have been working hard preparing it,” I said, knowing darn well that all I contributed was chopping vegetables.

Before he turned to leave the kitchen, he leaned over and kissed me on the cheek. It was…sweet, and unexpected. There was also something else. It sparked a yearning deep within me. One I only get when Liam touches me.

I waited a few seconds before following him. When I arrived in the dining room, Shaun smiled at me and mouthed, Sorry. I didn’t buy that for a minute. Neither he nor Morgan seemed troubled by any of this. Actually, they both seemed pleased with themselves.

Try as you may, but my heart is on lockdown. I’m not going to risk it getting broken.

The next hour was about dinner and discussing our favorite foods. I realized that I hadn’t tried anything outside of Tabiqian cuisine until I arrived in the States. My tastebuds were eager to explore all the different foods Boston had to offer.

“Doesn’t sound like you have a Tabiqian restaurant here. Why is that?” I asked.

Shaun raised a brow. “That is a very good point, Kyleigh. I think we’re going to need to speak to Reesa about that. Maybe you could be on the call when we do.”

“Me? Why?” I asked. Not that I was afraid of her. I’d become comfortable with her, at least as much as I could be.

“Your idea, you should present it,” Liam chimed in.
