Chapter 7

Now he wants me in Tabiq? Really? This was what he’d wanted, just not at that time. Thankfully Bennett wanted Connor to handle a few things locally first before flying out. That meant he had time to enjoy a dinner with Krista as well and see her home safe and sound.

Although he was surprised that she’d been still sleeping when he left that morning, he was thrilled she took his advice and got some sleep. He on the other hand had been tossing and turning most of the night. Had she intentionally taken her bra off so his t-shirt clung to her breasts? Keeping his hands off her had been fucking torture. Maybe it was a good thing Bennett reached out. If not, he might find himself coming up with excuses to see Krista more. That won’t be possible from the other side of the world.

It really sucked when you get what you want, and then wonder why now. But whatever this was with him and Krista, it wasn’t actually going anywhere. It couldn’t really. She lived in Vermont and he lived…well for now, in Boston. But next year it easily could be in California or anywhere in the country. This job with Henderson Corp wasn’t his lifelong dream. It was paying the bills, and building his resume, that’s all. But at no point did Connor ever picture himself in little old Montpelier. What protection did they need, unless being relaxed and happy became a crime, that place didn’t need him.

And neither does she.

“Mr. Falciano,” Mikie called out from down the hall.

Connor turned and saw him rushing over. When he got close Connor said, “What’s got you so…excited this morning.” He hoped it wasn’t more videos. The thrill seemed to have worn off and Connor had most of them taken down, with Mikie’s help that is. The kid really knew his way around a computer. What on earth was he doing pushing a bucket and mop?

“Just got back from the doctor. We heard their heartbeats this morning. Can you think of anything better than that?” Mikie asked.

Usually Connor could come up with a million things, but right now, he was just happy for Mikie. “That explains the smile.”

“Yup. And the day just keeps getting better. Dr. Chinto is in Boston. She is going to meet up with us after work. She said she doesn’t have much time, but we don’t care. It’s going to do Patty good to see her. I think Patty is homesick. At first I thought it was just being pregnant, but the doctor said she is fine.”

“She’s had a lot of changes all at once. Give her time, be there for her, and most of all, stop talking and just listen.”

“To you?” he asked.

Connor shook his head. “To Patty. If you’re all she has here in Boston, then you have to step it up.”

Mikie said, “For a guy who isn’t married, you seem to know a lot about this kind of stuff.”

“I have a sister,” he said flatly. But it had been Krista who seemed to be the one opening his eyes up to things. Kollette was more like he was, a career driven person. Or at least she was.

“If you’re not doing anything, why don’t you come with me and Patty and you can see Dr. Chinto again in person?”

“Thanks, but I have work I have to get done.” It wasn’t that he didn’t appreciate the offer, but the little time he had with Krista, he didn’t want it spent talking about babies.

“Too bad. I know she’s leaving early to go back home. You’d have liked her.”

I know. Because, I do.

“I better let you get back to work, so you don’t miss seeing her yourself,” Connor said.

“You’re right. Oh, hey, thanks again. You have no idea how much that money helped. When I gave it to Patty, she started crying. Well, she cries a lot lately, but the doctor said that is normal too.” Mikie shook his head. “Good thing we’re having twins. I can’t picture doing this twice.”

“Mikie, I wouldn’t talk like that in from of Dr. Chinto. She might have some words for you,” he warned.

“Really? Like what?” he asked.

“Like you’ve got the easy part and how Patty is the one pregnant,” he reminded.

Mikie laughed. “Easy for you to say. You’re not the one getting cried on every two minutes. I’m always trying to figure out what I did wrong. And when I ask, you know what she tells me?”

“No. What?” Connor asked.

“That she’s crying because she saw a cute picture of a puppy or a kitten or her favorite song came on. I haven’t done anything yet to make her cry,” he stated.

Connor chuckled. “I’m sure you will,” he said as he turned and headed to his office. Mikie was a good kid, but he had some growing up to do when it came to women.

Hell, who am I to talk? I’ve got the most beautiful woman asleep at my apartment and I’m here talking to Mikie.

He sat down as his desk and pulled out his cell phone. He wanted to call her and check how she was doing. Krista has his number and if anything was wrong, she could always call him. At least he knew she wasn’t going to spend the day sitting in his apartment bored.
