Chapter Four

Lindsay

“Seriously Samantha, this dress is fine.” I had just spent forty dollars on this dress. I wasn’t about to toss it into the closet.

“Yup. It’s fine if you’re going to visit your grandmother. But you’ve got a date with Phillip Heart. No way in hell are you wearing that.” Grabbing my wrist, she dragged me towards her room. “I’m telling you I have the perfect dress and you’ve got to at least try it on.”

“My ride will be here in thirty minutes. I don’t have time to change now.”

“Yes, you do, if you quit arguing,” she said, not letting go of me.

Maybe she was right. Samantha definitely had style. So did I – it was just generally more conservative. That could explain my lack of dates lately. I worked a lot of nights, so I was looking forward to dinner out tonight, even though it wasn’t a date. But I could pretend it was, if I didn’t fixate on getting a kiss goodnight. I bet he’s an amazing kisser, too.

Samantha turned and asked, “What are you thinking about?”

Had I voiced that out loud? I didn’t believe so. “Why?”

“Because you got tense all of a sudden. You’re not chickening out, are you?”

I shook my head. “I think it’s the death grip you have on my wrist that might be making me nervous,” I joked.

She looked down at her hand, then released me. “Sorry. Got carried away. But you’re not taking this seriously at all. I mean, you have a date with Phillip Heart.”

“I know. I’m the one who told you.”

“And you’re acting like it’s nothing,” she sighed.

“Well, it’s not really a date. He’s just taking me to dinner as an apology for being so harsh.” I wasn’t about to tell her that he practically accused me of being a prostitute. Samantha would flip out.

“Someone like Phillip Heart doesn’t take someone out just to say sorry.”

“Why? Isn’t he human?” I asked sarcastically. I didn’t care that he was a lawyer. That didn’t make him better than me. All it meant was he had more money and probably a hell of a lot of enemies, too.

She looked puzzled. “Not sure. Guess you’ll have to tell me after your date.” Opening her closet she pulled out dresses, looking them over and tossing them on the bed. “Nope. Not this one, either. This one says, ‘I’m easy.’” She turned to me with a smirk and asked, “That’s not the look you’re going for, right?”

Placing my hands on my hips I said, “You’re really pushing your luck.”

“I know, but your expression makes it totally worth it.” She tossed the dress on the bed with the others and turned back to the closet. “Ah, here it is. This is the one.” She pulled out a bright red dress. It had a high neckline, but bare shoulders and a partially open back as well. “This will look amazing on you. And once I do your makeup, Phillip won’t be able to think of anything except how beautiful you look.”

“I’m not interested in what he thinks,” I stated, lying through my teeth. Of course, I’d love it if he found me attractive, but this non-date wasn’t going anywhere, so I was trying not to get invested.

“Well, you’re crazy. I mean if someone as famous as Phillip asked me out, I’d be so nervous I’d be sick.”

“I’ve dealt with lawyers before.”

“Who cares what he does? He’s a Heart,” she said, as though I should know what that meant. She rolled her eyes and said, “I can’t believe it. You have no idea who he is, do you?”

“Apparently not. So why don’t you fill me in while I change.” I turned around and she unzipped my dress. I slipped it off and she reached for the new one.

“Oh, God. Don’t tell me you’re wearing those,” she said in disgust.

I looked down and she was pointing to my undergarments. “They’re clean.”

“They’re ugly.”

I chuckled. “They’re comfortable,” I corrected.

“Exactly. Ugly. You need to change them.”
