“He really is. Just works a lot and can’t spend as much time with me as I would like,” she said.

“I thought you said you really liked him,” I asked.

“I do, but I can’t compete with the hospital.”

“And you shouldn’t. All you need to do is enjoy the time that you do have together. That’s what I’m doing with Phillip.”

“Are you telling me that you don’t think past the moment? You’ve never thought about what tomorrow, or next month will be? Or if one day you two will be married with children?”

There she goes again with that word, married.I refused to allow myself to think like that. It was only going to bring me disappointment later. Phillip and I were from two different worlds. Eventually, we would say goodbye. And it’ll hurt like hell.

“No, I don’t,” I said.

“You’re joking, right? I mean, you and Phillip are perfect together.”

“We get along great. But perfect? There’s no such thing, Samantha.” Even though it feels perfect.

“That’s what we tell ourselves when we get scared because it feels good,” Samantha said softly. “You and I are alike in one way. We’re afraid of letting go of the control and…falling in love.”

“Is that what’s going on with you and Marcel?” She nodded. I think that’s what’s happening with me, too. “You deserve your happily-ever-after, Samantha.”

She shook her head. “No, I don’t. Do you know he’s only been with two women besides me? I can’t even count how many men I’ve dated.”

I’d lost track myself of her love life, but that was the last thing she needed to hear. “What did you tell me? Don’t let the past dictate your future.”

Samantha chuckled. “You know, sometimes you’re brilliant. I wonder where you get it,” she teased.

I walked over and hugged her. “From my best friend.”

“Don’t you forget it, either,” she said. “Now because I love you, I’m going to my room, and I won’t come out until after you leave with your Mr. Right.”

I shook my head as she left the room. At least all I need to worry about now is what Phillip has in store for us tonight.

I didn’t have to wait long, because he soon buzzed and I rang him in. When I opened the door, he wasn’t as dressed up as I expected him to be. Instead he was wearing jeans and a t-shirt. “Maybe…I should change,” I suggested.

When I stepped away, he grabbed my hand and pulled me into his embrace. He kissed me passionately and then said, “Don’t you dare. You look gorgeous.”

That was enough for me because I dressed for me. “Want to tell me where we’re going tonight?” So far, he’d been very secretive.

He shook his head. “You’re going to have to wait a little longer. But we have to go, because we have to be there for seven.”

“It’s only five-thirty.”

“And we need to get going. Friday night traffic can be difficult.”

“Maybe I know a shortcut if you tell me where we are going,” I suggested.

He laughed. “Good try. But I’m not telling you anything.”

“Fine.” I grabbed my purse and said, “I’m all yours.”

“Keep talking like that and we might not make it out of the apartment,” Phillip said.

Speaking softly, I said, “Samantha’s home.”

Phillip almost looked like he was sulking. “Guess we’re going out.”

Giggling I walked out of the apartment. “Thought you’d say that.” When we got into the limo, I tried again. “Are you sure I can’t bribe you into giving me a hint?” I ran my hand up his thigh and stopped.
