Chapter Fifteen

Phillip

“I know we’re in Rhode Island, but this isn’t an airport. It looks more like a farm. If we’re milking those cows in the pasture out there, I’m way overdressed,” Lindsay said as the helicopter started its descent.

“This is my brother Kenneth’s and his wife Shanda’s home.”

“Your brother is a farmer?” she said, sounding shocked.

I chuckled. “Not even close. This is Shanda’s place and she loves country living.” And Kenneth loves her more than he does his penthouse in Boston. “When they got married, Kenneth moved here.”

“You’re bringing me to meet your brother?” Lindsay asked.

“Yes and no. Shanda owns a shop here in Hope Valley. We’re going there. But this is the closest place with a landing pad.” The chopper landed and when the propellers stopped, I asked, “Are you ready to see what adventure I have planned for tonight?”

“I am,” she said, taking my hand.

We left the chopper and I escorted her to the Jeep. Kenneth had left the keys under the driver’s mat. I knew the way to Just Blown because the entire family had attended an event there. The drive wasn’t long, and Lindsay seemed to be enjoying the scenery along the way. I enjoyed living in the city, but even I didn’t mind a country ride once in a while. The smell of the cow fields, however, was something I could live without.

I pulled up in front of the store and parked the Jeep. “We’re here.”

“Just Blown?” Lindsay chuckled. “We didn’t need to fly out here for that,” she teased.

I laughed. “Don’t get me started. My brother and Shanda are waiting for us inside. We’re getting a private lesson.”

“Phillip, you’re leaving yourself wide open for more comments.”

I pulled her hand to my lips and said, “Save them all for tonight.” I kissed her palm, then her wrist, before adding, “Because I want to hear every single one of them.”

The door to the shop opened and Shanda stepped out. “Just in time.”

I did the introductions and Shanda brought us into the shop. “Welcome to Just Blown. You’re about to spend the next hour learning the craft of glass blowing. What would you like to create tonight? We can do a bowl, or a vase or…”

“A vase please,” she said.

“Wonderful choice. And you can fill it with flowers from Phillip,” Shanda said.

Was that a dig, or a hint?Because I hadn’t been showering her with flowers or gifts. Maybe I was a horrible boyfriend. Boyfriend? That was the first time I’d applied that word to myself. That’s a status update. When the fuck did that happen? It was funny, because it wasn’t Lindsay putting such pressure on me, it was me doing it to myself, just like me trying to sort out what my feelings are for her. You have me twisted in knots and for the first time in my life, I’m not sure what I want. All I knew was, the more time I spend with her, the deeper the feelings get.

“How about you, Phillip? What would you like to make?” Shanda asked.

A rock to crawl under.“I’ll just watch.”

“Oh, no you won’t. This is a date. We’re doing it together, just like the paint night,” Lindsay said.

“You did a paint night? I’ve been trying to get Kenneth to do one with me. He said he can’t paint,” Shanda said.

“Must run in the genes,” Lindsay teased. “But I’m sure Phillip will be much better at blowing glass.”

“That remains to be seen,” I said. “When do we start?”

“Kenneth is in the back room getting everything ready. The deal is, I learn the business side from him and he learns the craft from me.”

“How’s he doing with that?” I asked.

Shanda snickered and whispered, “Probably about as well as you paint.”

“That bad?”
