Kenneth laughed. “Yup, sounds like love to me,” he teased.

“Damn. I lost again,” Clark said.

“Lost what?” our father asked.

Knowing damn well that our parents would flip if they knew we took side bets on each other’s lives, I covered his ass. “Just a business venture he was banking on.”

Clark arched a brow, then smiled. “Yup. That’s it. I thought I knew what I was talking about, but it seems I was wrong.”

Mother said, “I hope you boys don’t start talking business. You know the rules. Sunday brunch is family time.”

Thankfully the butler came outside and announced, “Breakfast is served.”

Thank God.

Mother led the way inside. When we entered the formal dining room, she waved her hand and said, “Come along, everyone, and sit before the food gets cold.” Normally the couples all sat together, but nothing was as usual today and mother added, “Why don’t the ladies come and sit by me? I want to hear more about Lindsay.”

I sighed, but knew it was futile to put up an argument. If they didn’t talk now, they would talk after I left. At least I knew these ladies seemed to genuinely like Lindsay. If she comes next Sunday, at least she will have some allies.

The only thing left to do is to invite her.
