Shanda pulled out her phone and said, “No time like the present.”

It didn’t take her long to get the other two ladies on board with the plan.

“Brilliant idea, Lindsay,” Reanna said. “My cooking skills have really improved since Jerry and I have been dating.”

“Well, that’s good. I guess we don’t have to put you down to bring the drinks,” Anne teased. “How about you, Lindsay? Do you cook or bake?”

“Or do take-out,” Reanna added.

“I cook and bake. Not really a fan of eating out. Unless it’s pizza or seafood.”

“Hey, there’s an idea. Why don’t we do a clam bake, or maybe a surf and turf with lobster and steaks?” Shanda suggested.

I was thinking burgers, dogs, pasta salad. Can’t anyone do simple?

“Hey, I’m not putting any lobster in a pot,” Reanna said.

“Me neither,” added Anne. “Shanda, you live on a farm, you do it.”

“I live next door to a dairy farm,” she corrected. “Doesn’t mean I know how to milk the cows,” Shanda laughed.

“Good point,” I said. “Let’s stick with things we know we can do. Who knows how to grill?”

“I do,” Anne said. “And I also make amazing chicken wings. How about I bring those and handle the grill?”

“Perfect,” I said, jotting it down. “I can make side dishes if someone else wants to bring a fresh garden salad and maybe a fruit salad.”

Reanna said, “Yup. That sounds like my task. Put me down, please.”

“You got it. That leaves desserts and meat. What do you suggest?”

Shanda said, “How about we let Marcy handle the dessert, so she will feel included. I’ll marinate some steak tips…what else?”

“Richard told me that he and Clark go out for burgers. That sounds good, too,” Anne responded.

Now we’re talking.

“Looks like we have a cookout,” I said.

“Yup. Just need to call Marcy and get her to agree,” Reanna said. “Shanda, I think you should do it.”

I second that nomination.

“Why me?” Shanda asked.

“Because you’re the first daughter-in-law,” Anne replied.

“Well, Lindsay is dating the oldest, so I think she should do it,” Shanda said.

“Hey, that’s even a better idea. And after the lecture Phillip gave Marcy, I’m sure she will do whatever Lindsay wants,” Anne snickered. “Take advantage of it while it lasts, Lindsay. I’m sure it will wear off as soon as Richard or Clark finds someone.”

“I wish we could help with that,” Shanda said.

“Let’s just concentrate on one thing. The cookout,” I stated.

“I’m dialing Marcy now. Good luck, Lindsay. We’re counting on you,” Shanda said.

Misguided trust.
